Lecturer Professor Colin Amato speaks with Kay Baker from Awaken Within's Ozcat FM: Radio show Due Diligence. We discuss the basics of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, what a first visit would look like for someone seeking psychoanalysis .
Psychoanalysis is therapeutic for the user with examining what might the unconscious mind have to reveal about our well being and as well mental health issues. Part of this method works through dream interpretations : According to Freud, dream analysis is by far the most important psychoanalytic technique. He often referred to dreams as "the royal road to the unconscious."
Psychoanalysts may interpret dreams to have insight into the workings of your unconscious mind. Psychoanalyst encourages you to share thoughts that lead to the emergence of unexpected connections and memories. When transference occurs you project your emotions and feelings about another person onto the psychoanalyst. You'll then interact with them as if they were that other person. This technique can help your psychoanalyst understand how you interact with others. In general psychoanalysts spend time listening to people talk about their lives, which is why this method is often referred to as talk therapy.
