Ben Mesker is a Director and Director of Photography (DP) with over 30 years of experience in the industry—and five Emmys to his name. He’s created everything from TV shows to commercials and corporate videos, spanning a wide range of genres and emotional depths.
Since 2007, Ben and his wife Donna have co-owned Image Garden Inc., a video and web agency where storytelling meets strategy. Donna handles web design and development, while Ben crafts compelling imagery and video content that helps clients solve communication challenges—with joy and ease.
In this episode, Ben shares how growing up as a sensitive kid in a small Ohio town shaped his journey, how a single sentence from a mentor reframed his career, and why embracing your authentic self is often the most powerful thing you can do.
His advice, what he learned from his mentor: “If your heart is in the right place, the shots will show themselves to you.” This changed his life and trajectory for ever.
Making the right career decision isn’t about what’s most practical—it’s about finding what Ben calls “the kernel of the thing that delights you.” That’s when work no longer feels like work. That’s when you start creating a life you love.
