Hey friends,
welcome back to Away from the Bench where we're exploring the changing landscape of research and academia, through the experiences and lives of scientists and their allies.
As always you can get in touch with the show on twitter @AFTB_Podcast, let me know what you think.
In this episode I wanted to talk to Matthew Sinton about launching the STEM Village, an initiative that aims to build a community for LGBTQ+ scientists in Scotland.
I also felt this was a great opportunity to hear his story about the scenic route he took to reach the startline of his PhD. An experience I can sympathise with and I think will resonate with you too.
I hope you enjoy it.

Whether you like it or not Virtual Vivas are likely to be here for the foreseeable future. So what's it like to actually take part in one?
In this episode the newly minted Dr. Lana Woolford reflects on successfully defending her PhD thesis by Zoom during a global pandemic with her thoughts for others on how to prepare for a viva in this format.
She also tells us about her creative side hustle, Cloud Chamber Studios, as a freelance graphic artist and scientific animator.

In this episode Emma Sands and I chat about her experience of attending a virtual conference and how this might be the tipping point for this format to become more prolific in the future.

Today I've got a conversation I had with the engaging Elaine Emmerson, a Group Leader at the Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Scotland recorded on the 30th of April.
We talk about how her daily tasks haven't changed as much as you might think, the responsibility of caring for her team and ponder would Steven Fry been a better Harry Potter?
I hope you enjoy it.

Welcome to Away from the Bench, a podcast where we're going to explore how on earth researchers are attempting to remain productive in unproductive circumstances.
Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic many researchers have abandoned their offices and labs and decamped to their own homes to continue working. But how are they trying to simply get stuff done when they can no longer conduct lab based experiments, physically interact with their teams on a daily basis, and have kids and pets climbing over them for attention. How have their daily working lives changed.
I'm David, a PhD student at Edinburgh University in Scotland and I want to find out how everyone else is trying to maintain their productivity, positivity and look after themselves and their families during these uncertain times.
Join me as I chat to researchers at all stages in their careers to ask them "What's your new normal like?"
