This gentle Pastorale is a style of music which has its origins in the shepherds who came from the mountains to the cities and improvised melodies on their flutes. Originally, these were done around Christmas time, but are also used around the year.

Franz Anton Hugl (1706-1745) was a German organist, conductor and composer. The “Aria Siciliana” was a form of music used by composers to remind the listener or a calm nature setting, like a pastorale.

César Franck (1822-1890) was a French Romantic composer, teacher and church organist. The “Melodie” is one the many pieces that he wrote for instruments. He also wrote choral music, operas and songs for voice.

“Largo,” is a famous piece by George F. Handel, (1685-1759), known for it’s calm atmosphere. George F. Handel was a German-British Baroque composer well known for his choral and instrumental music, including “The Messiah.”

Jacques Chambonnières (c. 1601/2 – 1672) was a French harpsichordist and composer. Born into a musical family, he was also influential among other French musicians, including the Couperin family. The “Air” comes from his music for harpsichord.

Charles Wesley, Jr. (1757-1834) was an English organist and composer. His father, Charles Wesley, wrote the words to around 6,500 hymns. The music for mediation is “Pastorale.”
