  • (ARC306) IoT: Small Things and the Cloud | AWS re:Invent 2014
Working with fleets of ''Internet of Things'' (IoT) devices brings about distinct challenges. In this session, we will explore four of these challenges: telemetry, commands, device devops, and audit and authorization, and how they transform when deploying hundreds-of-thousands of resource-constrained devices. We'll explore high-level architectural patterns that customers use to meet these challenges through the functionality and ubiquity of a globally accessible cloud platform. If you consider yourself a device developer, an electrical, industrial, or hardware engineer, a hardware incubator class member, a new device manufacturer, an existing device manufacturer who wants to smarten up their next-gen devices, or a software developer working with people who identify as part of these tribes, you'll want to participate in this session.

  • (ARC307) Infrastructure as Code | AWS re:Invent 2014
While many organizations have started to automate their software develop processes, many still engineer their infrastructure largely by hand. Treating your infrastructure just like any other piece of code creates a ''programmable infrastructure'' that allows you to take full advantage of the scalability and reliability of the AWS cloud. This session will walk through practical examples of how AWS customers have merged infrastructure configuration with application code to create application-specific infrastructure and a truly unified development lifecycle. You will learn how AWS customers have leveraged tools like CloudFormation, orchestration engines, and source control systems to enable their applications to take full advantage of the scalability and reliability of the AWS cloud, create self-reliant applications, and easily recover when things go seriously wrong with their infrastructure.

  • (ARC308) Nike's Journey into Microservices | AWS re:Invent 2014
Tightly coupled monolithic stacks can present challenges for companies looking to take full advantage of the cloud. In order to move to a 100 percent cloud-native architecture, the Nike team realized they would need to rewrite all of the Nike Digital sites (Commerce, Sport, and Brand) as microservices. This presentation will discuss this journey and the architecture decisions behind making this happen. Nike presenters will talk about adopting the Netflix operations support systems (OSS) stack for their deployment pipeline and application architecture, covering the problems this solved and the challenges this introduced.

  • (ARC309) Building and Scaling Amazon Cloud Drive to Millions of Users | AWS re:Invent 2014
Learn from the Amazon Cloud Drive team how Amazon Cloud Drive services are built on top of AWS core services using Amazon S3, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon EC2, Amazon SQS, Amazon Kinesis, and Amazon CloudSearch. This session will cover design and implementation aspects of large-scale data uploads, metadata storage and query, and consistent and fault-tolerant services on top of the AWS stack. The session will provide guidance and best practices about how and when to leverage and integrate AWS infrastructure and managed services for scalable solutions. This session will also cover how Cloud Drive services teams innovated to attain high throughputs.

  • (ARC311) Extreme Availability for Mission-Critical Applications | AWS re:Invent 2014
More and more businesses are deploying their mission-critical applications on AWS, and one of their concerns is how to improve the availability of their services, going beyond traditional availability concepts. In this session, you will learn how to architect different layers of your application?beginning with an extremely available front-end layer with Amazon EC2, Elastic Load Balancing, and Auto Scaling, and going all the way to a protected multitiered information layer, including cross-region replicas for relational and NoSQL databases. The concepts that we will share, using services like Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Route 53, will provide a framework you can use to keep your application running even with multiple failures. Additionally, you will hear from Magazine Luiza, in an interactive session, on how they run a large e-commerce application with a multiregion architecture using a combination of features and services from AWS to achieve extreme availability.

  • (ARC312) Processing Money in the Cloud | AWS re:Invent 2014
Financial transactions need to be processed and stored securely and in real time. Together with a giant in the mortgage insurance industry, we have developed an elastic, secure, and compliant data processing framework on AWS that meets these processing requirements and drastically improves the time it takes to make a decision on a loan. This session will discuss what we've learned along the way, how we have overcome multiple security and compliance hurdles, and how other organizations in regulated industries can do the same. This session is targeted at business decision-makers and solutions architects working in regulated industries with high security and compliance requirements.

  • (ARC313) So You Think You Can Architect? | AWS re:Invent 2014
TV talent shows with online and mobile voting options pose a huge challenge for architects: How do you handle millions of votes in a very short time, while keeping your system robust, secure, and scalable? Attend this session and learn from AWS customers who have solved the architectural challenges of setting up, testing, and operating mobile voting infrastructures. We will start with a typical, standard web application, then introduce advanced architectural patterns along the way that help you scale, secure, and simplify your mobile voting infrastructure and make it bulletproof for show time! We'll also touch on topics like testing and support during the big event.

  • (ARC317) Maintaining a Resilient Front Door at Massive Scale | AWS re:Invent 2014
The Netflix service supports more than 50 million subscribers in over 40 countries around the world. These subscribers use more than 1,000 different device types to connect to Netflix, resulting in massive amounts of traffic to the service. In our distributed environment, the gateway service that receives this customer traffic needs to be able to scale in a variety of ways while simultaneously protecting our subscribers from failures elsewhere in the architecture. This talk will detail how the Netflix front door operates, leveraging systems like Hystrix, Zuul, and Scryer to maximize the AWS infrastructure and to create a great streaming experience.

  • (ARC401) Black-Belt Networking for the Cloud Ninja | AWS re:Invent 2014
Do you need to get beyond the basics of VPC and networking in the cloud? Do terms like virtual addresses, integrated networks and network monitoring get you motivated? Come discuss black-belt networking topics including floating IPs, overlapping network management, network automation, network monitoring, and more. This expert-level networking discussion is ideally suited for network administrators, security architects, or cloud ninjas who are eager to take their AWS networking skills to the next level.
