What happens when technology changes the way you see the world before you even notice it? Philosopher Samir Chopra describes the moment he realized he was mentally turning ordinary life into Facebook content and why digital systems change their users alongside themselves.
We discuss loneliness, online connection and why smartphones become so seductive when daily life feels isolated or monotonous. Samir then separates three ideas that are often collapsed into one: machines that perform intelligent tasks, systems designed to reproduce human cognition and artificial persons that might deserve rights.
The conversation turns to consciousness, narrow and general intelligence, legal agency and whether a machine can become an agent simply because psychological language best predicts its behaviour. We finish by asking whether children raised with robots will care if those machines truly have minds, and why understanding platform incentives is essential to reclaiming your attention.

00:00 When Samir realized he was thinking in Facebook posts

Tom Kemp: Big Tech Is Tracking You, AI Is Coming for Jobs and Cyberwar Could Shut Everything Down
What happens when artificial intelligence reshapes work while technology companies collect enough data to predict, target and potentially exclude you? Technology entrepreneur and policy advocate Tom Kemp explains why automation will create opportunities while still producing painful displacement, lower wages and wider inequality for some workers.
We discuss data brokers, targeted advertising and the California Delete Act, which was designed to give people one place to request the deletion of information held by registered brokers. Tom explains how personal data can support identity theft, political manipulation and discriminatory advertising, then argues for the right to challenge consequential automated decisions and know when AI generated the material in front of you.
The conversation then turns to technology monopolies, antitrust and why concentrated control can worsen privacy and AI risks. We finish with cyberattacks on power systems and cloud infrastructure, the case for stronger national incident reporting, what first-time founders misunderstand about markets and Tom’s advice for building a career that can survive technological change.

AI is already changing work, medicine, privacy and who controls our data. Dinidh O'Brien argues that Gen Z is well placed to adapt to this technological shift, while warning that current systems can reproduce medical bias, expand surveillance and create difficult questions about responsibility.
We discuss whether machines could become conscious, how deepfakes could destabilize public life and where AI may improve cancer screening, emergency response and access to primary care. Dinidh explains why representative medical data matters, why patients must be involved in decisions and how blockchain could create a verifiable record of consent without placing private health information on a public ledger.
The conversation then turns to decentralized science, cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, mass data collection, encrypted communication and quantum computing. We finish with Dinidh's experience of burnout, the changes that helped him recover, the value of curiosity and why finding a humane workplace can change a person's life.
