Babeushka's Big Queer Media Review

This week we are going to be reviewing “Fit”, a 2010 film full of short stories focusing on different relationships amongst a group of millennials.  I thought it would be quite interesting to again look at a collection of short films like we have done before, but this time they have an overarching narrative and are all connected to each other rather than just being separate small films with a common theme.

This week we are reviewing “It’s a Sin”, a British drama miniseries that takes place in London between 1981 and 1991, following the lives of several gay men and their friends while they live through the HIV & AIDS crisis in the UK.  It's been a while since we watched a TV show, and as the issue of HIV/AIDs is a close cause to the Sisters, how could we not look at this!

This week we are reviewing “Bloom”, a comic by Kevin Panetta and Savanna Ganucheau about two boys who slowly develop feelings for one another as they spend the summer working together in a quaint seaside town.  As we approach the end of summer, why not round it out with another tale of summer romance.

On this episode, Babeushka is reviewing “Camp” by by L.C. Rosen, a book where we go to a summer camp for queers where inclusion and acceptance is high, but our main character is changing who they are to win the heart of one specific camper.  Since it’s the height of summer, it’s clearly a seasonal pick to review this now!

On this episode, Babeushka is reviewing “The Danish Girl”, a bi-opic around Lili Elbe, one of the first recipients of gender-affirming surgery.  With the amount of vitriol trans people are receiving in the UK and other parts of the world right now, it felt important to look at one of the key figures in history who pushed for their gender to be recognised despite societal pushback.

RE-RELEASE OF EPISODE

On this episode, Babeushka is reviewing “Bond of Dreams, Bonds of Love”, a manga about a high schooler finally admitting his love for his neighbour who is also a shinto priest and his determination to win him over.  It’s been a while since we reviewed a manga, so I thought it would be good to pick one I read several years ago to see how good it actually was.

RE-RELEASE OF EPISODE

On this episode, Babeushka is reviewing "Boys on Film Presents: Campfire", a collection of four short films by Bavo Defurne from 1995 to 2000, all reflecting certain aspects of youth and sexuality.  We are reviewing this collection this week as it is the new year, I wanted to try another new medium to review, and we haven't looked at a collection of short films yet, so here we go!

RE-RELEASE OF EPISODE

On this episode, Babeushka is reviewing "Happiest Season", a Christmas film dealing with coming out to your family during the most stressful time of the year!  How could we not be doing a Christmas related film at this time!

RE-RELEASE OF EPISODE

On this episode, Babeushka is reviewing "Yuri! On Ice", an anime focused on Yuri who is training to compete in the next figure skating grand prix with the help of the current Russian champion!  Since we are into December, I thought it would be good to get something more winter themed reviewed, and figure skating on the ice seems to be pretty wintery to me!

 RE-RELEASE OF EPISODE

On this episode, Babeushka is reviewing  “Felix Ever After” by Kacen Callender, a book in which teenager Felix is receiving transphobic messages, goes seeking revenge, and ends up in a quasi-love triangle.  As November is host to Trans Awareness Week, Trans Day of Remembrance, and Trans Parent Day, it is only appropriate that we spend each episode this month boosting more representative of our trans siblings.
