When a new mother asked author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie how to raise her daughter to be a feminist, the author responded by writing Dear Ijeawele, a book with fifteen empowering suggestions mothers should try—from rejecting traditional gender roles (“the knowledge of cooking does not come pre-installed in a vagina”) to leading by example (“do not define yourself solely by motherhood”). In this episode of Babies Balance and Bliss, we discuss Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions, and it’s parenting lessons.

As parents we are in the business of setting boundaries daily—no desert before dinner no matter how much your child pleads even if it’s a holiday … or maybe your child can sneak in a sugary treat as long as they don’t make it a habit. Practical experience tells us that our boundaries can be a bit arbitrary and we draw lines simply because we said so. We wanted to have a little fun with this idea and in this episode will play “Because I Said So,” a game we have made up where we walk though familiar parenting scenarios and share where we would set the boundary. Join in on the game! It's the Babies Balance and ... Bad Behavior episode.
