  • Inside the Out100 & Learning How to Be Gay | Daniel Reynolds, Out Magazine & The Advocate

    Send us Fan Mail

Here’s what happens when you start as an intern at the magazine that changed your life... and end up running it!

On this week’s BabyGay™ Podcast, host PJ Brescia (they/them) sits down with Daniel Reynolds (he/him), Editor-in-Chief of Out Magazine and The Advocate, live from the historic Black Cat in Silver Lake, where the 1967 protests that birthed The Advocate took place.

Daniel shares the story of coming out in high school, the therapist who helped him picture a happy queer future, and how pushing back against schools and systems that left queer students out sparked a lifelong passion for representation. We talk about why queer media can be a lifeline, LA’s rich queer history, and letting go of the rules we were raised to follow... because there’s no one timeline for a queer life. Daniel also takes us behind the scenes of how a magazine issue comes together and how the Out100 gets made.

And the 2026 Out100 is officially here! As a 2025 honoree, PJ is cheering on this year’s class of the most impactful and influential LGBTQ+ people of 2026, from artists and disruptors to educators and storytellers, with Andrew Scott named Icon of the Year. Read the full list now, and grab the Nov/Dec issue in print November 3, or digitally now!

  • Showgirls, The Birdcage & Coming Out in Hollywood | Gerry Rich

    Send us Fan Mail

Here’s what happens when you chase your dreams...and realize the one thing missing is you…

On this week’s BabyGay™ Podcast, host PJ Brescia (they/them) sits down with Gerry Rich (he/him), a Hollywood marketing executive and author whose life story is a powerful testament to ambition, self-acceptance, and the courage to live authentically.

Gerry shares his journey from a kid in St. Louis plotting his way to Hollywood to becoming the marketing maven behind films like The Crying Game, The Birdcage, and Showgirls! He poured everything into his career and pushed his sexuality aside, until landing his dream job left him asking what was really missing. He opens up about coming out to his dad in a letter sent by FedEx, and how his father went from not knowing what to say to showing up at PFLAG meetings.

We talk about coming out later in life, family acceptance, queer representation in film and TV, and what it means to stop proving your worth...and start living as yourself. This episode is a reminder that it’s never too late to come out, and that life opens up once you do.

Gerry’s memoir, Chasing Hollywood: A Marketing Chief’s Lessons on Breaking Through, is OUT NOW in hardcover, audiobook and ebook! It’s packed with his coming-out journey and behind-the-scenes stories from decades of Hollywood’s most iconic campaigns.

  • Coming Out, Queer Media & Holding Space | NLGJA LGBTQ+ Journalists Panel

    Send us Fan Mail

We turned a panel about podcasting into a podcast episode...how meta?! Coming out stories, queer media, and the future of LGBTQ+ storytelling, live from a room full of queer journalists.

On this week's BabyGay™ Podcast, host PJ Brescia (they/them) goes live from the NLGJA 2026 National Convention in San Francisco @nlgjaofficial  This episode is our panel "The Podcast Era: Audio & Video Storytelling, Queer Narratives, and Holding Space," in partnership with Holding Space with Tracy E. Gilchrist  @holdingspacewithtracy . PJ is joined by three leaders in queer media and LGBTQ+ advocacy:

-Tracy E. Gilchrist (she/her), host of Holding Space With Tracy, former editor-in-chief of The Advocate, and the journalist behind the viral "holding space" interview with Wicked's Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande  @holdingspacewithtracy

-Ryan Lu (she/her), LA-based content creator known as @e.mo.tions and host of the manifestation podcast Delulu with Ryan Lu  @delulubffs

-Kierra Johnson (she/they), President of the National LGBTQ Task Force  @TheTaskForce  national expert on queer and reproductive rights, and PJ's fellow 2025 Out100 honoree

Three very different coming out stories. Tracy came out at 18 or 19 (she blames Girl Scout camp). Kierra was the campus ally until a crush changed everything...and her mom asked, "Do you have to decide right now?" And Ryan came out to her parents by accident, when they watched her podcast.

We talk about the shows that taught us being different is a superpower, how queer media and LGBTQ+ journalism have changed from print to podcasts, and why the hook grabs attention but the long conversation changes hearts and minds. We dive into building a creator business on your own terms, and the queer elders who are teaching us how to keep pushing forward…plus why we don't have to wait to be covered by someone else. We can build our own media!

On this week's BabyGay™ Podcast, host PJ Brescia (they/them) goes live from Point Foundation's National Leadership Conference in Los Angeles with three leaders from Point's Board and Educational Advisory Board:

    • Chris Go (he/him), Chief of Staff at equalpride, publisher of Out and The Advocate
    • Dr. Christopher Nizer (he/him), a Bay Area chiropractor and six-year Point board member

Chris Go grew up Christian conservative, called it his cross to bear, and found his liberation on the Fourth of July. Alex was a recruited D1 soccer player in a sport where being out didn't feel possible...fast forward, he went on to captain West Hollywood Soccer Club to gold at the 2018 Gay Games in Paris.

We talk about the divas who found us before we found ourselves, the Black Cat's place in queer history, building community 3,000 miles from home in Lima, Peru, and why so many young queer people still turn to media to see themselves first…plus why storytelling is crucial to our existence.

Through Point Foundation, these three incredible role models are helping LGBTQ+ and ally students access scholarships, mentorship, and a community that lasts long after graduation.
