Zo somehow finds himself deep, deep under the surface of the ocean: near the Cayman Trough while America and the Soviet Union have their Cold War. He's aboard the most advanced underwater facility ever constructed. The Navy commandeered the facility to investigate a sunken submarine, but, to Zo, the Navy SEAL officer sent to oversee operations don't appear wrapped to tight. The SEAL's presence only cranks up the tension for the hard working crew as the engineer and designer of this underwater office space is also here. By herself she's messy enough, but she's in the middle of a contentious divorce with this cramp space's commander. There's almost too much drama for comfort, but then designer/engineer starts seeing . . . things. She claims that their are underwater crafts that don't belong to either the U.S. or U.S.S.R. She even suggests that humans may no longer be the most advanced species on Earth.

Zo is in the wrong place at the wrong time: in the midst of Russia during an intense moment in World War II or, as the Russians would come to call it: The Great Patriotic War. In a city once known as Stalingrad on the banks of the Volga river the fighting has intensified as Russian civilian fighters and the Soviet Red Army desperately defend their country against the onslaught of the German Nazi war machine. Zo as well as the rest of the citizenry experience their morality weakening day by day, but gradually news of hope appears as a light at the end of a long dark tunnel. People begin to talk about an amazing sniper named Vasily Zaitsev picking off Germans as easily as a child might break sticks. The exploits of Zaitsev bolsters both the citizens of Stalingrad and the hearts of the Red Soldiers and they fight on. Victory in sight.

Zo is swept up in the excitement of 17th century France and by excitement that means constant war, the threat of public riots and persistent food shortages.  Among all of this upheaval are rumors that three of the most famous of the Musketeers of the Kings Guard have gone rogue; though they've long since retired, many say that these men present a clear and present threat to the Crown and, given how His Royal Subjects feel towards their young King; they would gladly cheer on Anthos, Porthos and Aramis if they did indeed plan to depose the King. There is another rumor that an escape had occurred from one of Frances most secure prisons. It was the escape of a prisoner held with such secrecy that no one knows his identity. Those who believe these rumors refer to him as The Man in the Iron Mask.

Zo gets a call from a man who's voice was familiar. The man had the demeanor of an old friend who was excited to talk to him. He wanted to catch up, sit down and talk about old times. They agree to meet at the bar and, while the man seemed friendly enough, Zo realized that the stranger isn't actually someone he knew or anyone he remembered meeting. Not wanting to be rude Zo carries on with the meeting with this friendly stranger, who's name was Ricky Roma, over drinks about morality, the future, and if there was something that anyone wanted then they should just take it. They should throw caution to the wind. They should give in to their base impulses because you only live once. You can't miss out on the good things in life because of morality or an abundance of caution because that's an easy way to miss out and get left behind. There is no morality. Ricky Roma then pulls out a brochure extolling the bountiful virtues of the Glengarry Highlands in Florida . . . it is a very tempting offer.

Zo has had some bad days, but he'd never had days as bad as the end of the world! It started with a localized storm, next there was the largest aircraft he'd ever seen hovering over D.C.. It was so large that he could just barely see it from his apartment all the way in the suburbs of Suitland, Maryland. One would suppose that it was a "UFO", but it was later identified as an honest to goodness extra-terrestrial space craft - one of fifteen that where hovering over major cities all around the world. President Whitmore suggested that we stayed in our home given that the aliens had not made any overtly hostile action. That's utter ridiculousness! It's time to get the Hell up outta here right now! Of all the times a thing like this could happen: it had to happen two days before Independence Day?

Zo somehow ended up in the wild west, but it's incredibly west and it's incredibly wild. At a port he notices there's a skirmish as people are disembarking a passenger ship. It's a fight between one man defending a woman against half a dozen men. The man handles himself well against the men and is only hampered by the woman accidently hitting that man while she's trying to help him. The man announced that his name was Mathew Quigley and at this the men stopped fighting, made amends and both Quigley and the woman join the men on their wagons and they head out to the Outback. It was the most curious exchange witnessed by all those gathered at the port that day. It left the people to wonder who was that man Quigley and what was he doing Down Under?

Zo visits some old friends at a trailer park. It seems like a normal place with kids running amok, teenagers fooling around and senior citizens looking for someone to fix their TV's so that they can watch their soap operas. Alex is just the guy the guy that they need: a recent high school graduate who is this neighborhood's handyman. Zo noticed that Alex is also fantastic at the Starfighter videogame. Zo had tried the game himself and isn't really good at it, but Alex is a genuine prodigy. Unfortunately, there's not much that anyone can do with the skills of "Best Videogame Player" in the mid 1980's. It's not like you can play this Starfighter game to train to pilot an actual spaceship right? . . . Right?

Zo is on a research project that takes him to the National Institute of Mental Health and while there he discovered their secret program of animal experimentation on rats, mice, dogs, cats and other animals. These experiments seem cruel and unnecessary. What he's heard is that some of the rodents had gained super-intelligence and had escaped the lab. The scientists at NIMH has tracked them down to a nearby farm. There's not a lot that Zo can do with this intel; he can only hope that the brave mice and rats can avoid re-capture and live a life free of pain and torture. These animals should forever remain The Secret of NIMH.
