  • Trauma, our nervous system, and ways to restore optimal functioning.

Talking about how trauma effects our nervous system with trauma and movement expert, Julie Thom. We go over traumas systemic impact and how to regulate our nervous system after a traumatic event.

Question 1: First, I think that we should start out by defining what trauma is….I think there’s a lot of confusion about it’s origins and naming of trauma like we’ve all heard the terms micro and macro traumas, big T, little t. How do you define trauma?

Question 2: How might trauma show up in our fascia and nervous system? And how do you release it?

Question 3: Can you tell us how the vagus nerve comes into play with trauma and its impacts on our functioning?

Question 4: Segwaying into the next question, do different body parts hold different emotions….? Like anger for instance showing up in the back of the neck, fear showing up in our gut as an upset stomach. Sadness stored in the throat/chest showing up as tightness or heart palpitations? Is being in touch with your emotions and where it shows up for you a key to healing?

Question 5: ( 2 part question) What have been your most impactful interventions for your clients? And could you share a quick application of how to perform a self release for trauma

Question 6: How has trauma work changed the way you approach each and every one of your clients? and what would you tell other practitioners starting out in this area?

Question 7: Who has shaped your learning in this area of practice (mentored you, ppl you follow) and what resources do you recommend for listeners if they’d like to learn a bit more?

  • The 3 Habits to Peak Performance in 2023: A New Year Action Plan for Busy Professionals
Show Notes: 1. What is peak performance?
“The execution of an action” “something accomplished”
Sculpting the best version of yourself.
And doing it VERY well over a long period of time
The more athletes I work with the more interested I become in the relationship between mind and body where I’m seeing that fitness promotes more than just visible abs, round butt and smaller tummy.
Performers at the highest level possess more than just strong legs and coordination.
I’ve been in this space for over 8 years now and recently I find myself circulating through the classic hierarchy of competence- I knew very little, picked up enough to be dangerous, worked on my weaknesses and worked up the ladder to now I understand that I know very little.
    2. What determines one’s peak performance? Subjective/objective measures? Both?
Humans are MASSIVELY complex and live in a multi-factorial environment
Periodization schemes should be questioned- You can’t control adaptation of a complex organism in a multi factorial system through standard periodization…
The most common answer in our industry is “it depends”
There are examples of unicorns everywhere.
    Yes, both subjective and objective.
We should always be tracking both.
I fill out a wellness questionnaire daily, record body comp metrics monthly, and track metrics related to my current physical goals every other month
    3. What are the 3 habits to peak performance?
It took me FOREVER to distill these down…
    Big rocks, mind pump
    Sleep
    Move- fun & wellness
One of the biggest mistakes in health and wellness is not spending more time doing the activity you love.
    Consistent/Sustainable/Disciplined Habits with intent
Other individual items- hydration, protein, step count/movement, etc
    4. What is the first step someone should take if they’re having trouble sticking to their action plan?
Pair the action down- 100oz of water daily to 75oz daily
    Make it sustainable
    Tortoise & the hare
Fitness and performance should be as habitual as brushing your teeth or preparing your dinner
    5. Key takeaways
The simple stuff done consistently is the most powerful performance enhancer
    We live in a hyper-gimmicky society…
    6. What does back to body basics mean to you?
It means cutting out the noise in the fitness space and listening for what really matters, for what is really going to enhance our performance and help us achieve the best version of ourselves.
We all have this image of fitness in our minds- Liver King, World Cup athletes, CrossFit, NFL. We’re led to believe fitness is this sexy, self absorbed thing for the physical shell only. Getting back to basics in fitness to me means recognizing that the mind and body, what we say and what we do are intimately linked. One of the legacies I want to leave in this space is opening the door to seeing fitness as a way to tap into and combine our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual selves. The Greeks/Roman’s/BPR Institute. Fitness has more influence on our lives than just losing weight. If you resonate with performing or working towards peak performance you won’t get there with a 30 day cleanse or 6 week program, insane crash diets or training programs that leave you in a sweaty heap every day. There are agreed upon principles and methods… That’s why consistency, sustainability, and habit creation are a cornerstone of my discourse and approach to health, fitness and Performance.

Hello listeners, welcome to the Back to Body Basics podcast first off thank you for your attention and finding your way to this podcast! I appreciate you ;)
I’m your host Mallory Rickloff, OTD, OTR/L and fitness enthusiast. I started this podcast as a way for health professionals to connect and promote their skillsets and also for people to learn the latest evidence to support their health and wellness journey.
A little bit about me, I have a B.S. in Health and Physical Education and a minor in Human performance from Edinboro University now know as Penn West Edinboro. I was a DII collegiate swimmer for 4 years and ran track and field for a semester while getting my degree.
After graduation, I knew I wanted to go further, so I got my OTD from Gannon University.
I have about 2 years of home health experience and I am currently now pursuing non-traditional opportunities in the online space- specifically mindset coaching, sports rehab, and nutrition consulting.
When I’m not working, you can find me lifting weights/crossfitting, training for triathlons, hiking, reading, sunbathing, and hanging out with friends and family.
I am excited to bring you this podcast and I aim to fill episodes with interesting people with various backgrounds in the Health and Fitness industry.
