Backpacking America

The International Alliance of Stage and Theatrical Stage Employees is voting on "Strike Authorization", the process for formally striking union wide, from October 1st through the 3rd. They are fighting for an end of "Fraturdays", a schedule of being worked 14-18 hours ending the shift on Sunday morning. They are also fighting for an end to 14-18 hour shifts throughout the work week as this has resulted in numerous deaths, car accidents, and workplace accidents/illnesses.

The United Farm Workers are going on strike in opposition to California Governor Gavin Newsom's (D) veto of AB-616. This bill would have given UFW members and other Agricultural Unions the ability to vote in union elections via mail in ballot. Sharp criticism emerged against Newsom, who allowed mail in ballots for his recall election, but not for union elections.

I travel to Island Grow in Dix Hills (@island_grow on instagram) for the "Into the Great Wide Open" Exhibit put on by An Artists Duty (@anartistsduty). While there I met some wonderful artists, looked at some amazing art, and checked out some great CBD and Delta 8 products!

Big shout out to Stephanie (@stephaniecriedpower) for putting this all together and speaking on BPA about this awesome project dedicated to cannabis reform and justicice for those still incarcerated for weed.

Also big thank you for Cara (@cnw_art) talking about her various pieces at the exhibit, and the hilarious Jenny Feldy (@jennyfeldy) and Jason Scoop (@jasonscoop) for the chaotic and entertaining vibes!

On this episode of Backpacking America I talk about a victory in the struggle for justice regarding the murder of Elijah McCain. His killers have been indicted, but what about the killers of thousands of working class people in America that will walk free?

I discuss the need for an amendment to the Constitution to make food a right for every American. To do this will require a multi-tiered restructuring of the economy, agricultural production and distribution.

August 23rd 2021 is the 94th Anniversary of Sacco & Vanzettis wrongful execution. The state of Massachusetts, within recent years, has pardoned the pair for their alleged crimes. The trial was motivated by anti immigrant sentiment, and anti-communist purges in the United States.

The war in Afghanistan has been waged for 20 years. The United States has finally pulled out of the country, leading to the Taliban swiftly taking control of the country. Many are warhawking about Afghanistan, demanding America stay in the nation forever, while others acknowledge that while the Taliban taking over is a tragedy, US imperialism is not the way to defeat the Taliban. Only the Afghan people can defeat the Taliban.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran has vetoed the Police Class Protection legislation. This bill passed the County Legislature 12 to 6 and would give Police a wide range for legal retribution against protestors. This came with the strong advice by the Attorney General of New York after concerns of First Amendment violations would soon occur after the passage of such a document. I speak about how this is a victory for working people and respond to the critiques of the veto.

Myself and Dr. Asatar Bair discuss the issues plaguing American Communist Parties. These issues ultimately result in hostility or distrust, when in reality most of these parties are similar in function and ideology.
