Backpacks for Life is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving homeless and at-risk veterans through distributing resource-filled backpacks, and a mentorship program. Since it was founded in 2014, BFL has worked one-on-one with veterans to assist them in finding the right supportive services for their situation through endless hours of personal interaction and the physical distribution of their backpacks. Throughout this episode, the duo walk us through how Backpacks for Life came to be, starting with Brett’s service in the marines deployed overseas in Afghanistan, navigating his life post-deployment, and how his act of kindness jump started life again. They discuss the importance of listening to your audience, building a start-up, and how they went from packing donated backpacks to patenting the design, and distributing 11,000 of their own military-grade backpacks.
