I am truly honored to have such an accomplished guest on the show (I’m even more proud to say I’ve known Malique since middle school!). He is a musician, (unofficial) motivational speaker, activist, and probably many other things I don’t know about yet. But all these titles and accomplishments didn’t come overnight and that journey is the heart of this episode. To conclude season one, I will be recapping my freshman year of college, touching on everything from imposter syndrome and having a crappy social life to having an equally crappy 19th birthday and taking myself on dates. I felt it was appropriate to usher in my sophomore year by finally closing the book on my freshman year. I had lots of fun working on this episode and hope you enjoy it! As you could tell from the very straightforward title, we’ll be talking about colorism—its history, its role in casting, its impact on the black community, and how to combat it for more representational black casting. Interestingly, this episode was born from a paper I wrote this past semester. I’m really excited to be able to create an audio version of the paper, as I know no one wants to read a 10-page paper lol. Writing this paper (and ultimately turning it into this episode) was a true learning experience for me, and I hope it is the same for you.
