  • 64 - Denise Schwartz Hosts Hiker Karen Huchendorf's story about youth, hiking, aging and curiosity, and how life goes on and friendships stay strong

Forty years ago, Denise and Karen became friends while working as staff at the School for International Training and the Experiment in international Living in Vermont. Over the years they lost touch...until this summer, when Karen, now a full-time global hiker, texted, "Mind if I drop by?" Here's a short story about youth and work and hiking and curiosity, but mostly about how life goes on and friendships stay strong.

  • 63 - Denise Schwartz Hosts Thinking About a Move? Marsha and Norm Talk About How They Made a Move to a Place Where They Knew No One and Took Steps to Become Connected to a Town Where Everyone (Almost!) Knows Their Names

On this episode of Backyard OASIS, host Denise Schwartz has a lovely conversation with Marsha Stone and Norm Hirschfeld about their decision to move from Waltham, MA to Greenfield, MA later in life, despite New England being absolutely chock full of beautiful towns and cities. What should older adults who hope to move later in life look for in a community? Why did Marsha and Norm choose Greenfield as their community? The group touches on how finding like-minded folks, getting involved in city government, and fresh air and gorgeous scenery all came together to make Franklin County their new home. Sometimes a trip to the local food co-op is all you need to determine that some place is the place for you.

  • 62 - Denise Schwartz Hosts Building Age-Friendly Communities For Happier Living, with guest Jason Molony.

So humans, let’s face it. We are living in an aging world. For the first time in history, and probably for the rest of human history, people aged 65 and over will outnumber children under the age of 5. By 2030, that total is projected to increase to 1 billion. That means 1 in every 8 of the earth’s inhabitants will be an older adult.

Lots to think about. So, today with Jason’s help, we are going to talk about how we can prepare to live more healthily and happily in our aging world, how we can think critically about it, plan for it and take action.

This goal has been achieved while serving as a guidance counselor, school psychologist, and special education director in the public schools, as a trainer and consultant in the outplacement field, as a psychologist with the Medical Service Corps of the U.S. Army Reserves, and in his private practice of almost three decades. In addition to his published works, he has delivered training for organizations on topics related to stress. In his spare time, Dr. German enjoys hiking, traveling, singing, working on small building projects, and spending quality time with family and friends.
