Chronic conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, blood pressure, and other health challenges can lead to life-threatening afflictions that can be avoided with simple measures. One of these ailments is Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). In today’s episode, Dr. Vinod Kumar, a vascular specialist, analyses this condition and how people can avoid developing a Peripheral Arterial Disease.
Key points from today's episode are :
1. Plaque build-up in the blood vessels of the Peripheral system—brain, kidneys, hands, and legs—is known as PAD. The most feared complication of PAD is amputation of the hands or feet.
2. The two main risk factors that can lead to development of PAD are history of smoking and diabetes. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle are other endangering risk factors.
3. It’s extremely critical to understand PAD in advance. Sometimes the patient is unaware of the disease until it’s in its end stage where they are told on the first check-up that their limb has to be amputated.
4. Early symptoms offer opportunities for intervention. Signs to look out for are discomfort in walking, cramps or heaviness in the feet during sleep, numbness and off-balance, and lack of sensation.
