Reducing Allergies with Essential Oils with Lila Collins, RN
Let's talk about ALLERGIES! Allergies can either be seasonal or year round, and the pesky symptoms include sneezing, itchy red/watering eyes, runny nose, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, coughing, rashes, swollen lips or skin, and just overall feeling sick. They can be triggered by airborne allergens such as pollen, pet dancer, dust mites, and mold; or they can be from foods such as peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, etc. They occur when the body's immune system is reacting to a particular substance as though it is harmful.
Here's how it happens:
When allergens are breathed in, the immune system views it as danger, so it releases antibodies that attack the allergens. A chemical called histamine is released into the nose, eyes, and lungs, which is intended to attack harmful agents and remove them from the body.
Allergies and Your Immune System
Allergies generally indicate that your immune system us in overdrive, reacting to a whole host of things that don't usually cause harm to the body.
Things You Can Do to Control Allergy Symptoms
Essential Oils
Essential oils help detoxify the body and fight infections, bacteria, parasites, microorganisms, and other harmful toxins. They can be used by being added to your bath, cup of tea, massage oil, oil diffuser, or just spraying them into the air.
Breathing in essential oils is known as Aromatherapy, which stimulates the body through your sense of smell. What you smell can affects your whole body.
What we Recommend:
Lavender: calms and reduces inflammation, prevents allergic inflations
Eucalyptus: can help with congestion, when breathed in provides a coping sensation.
Tea tree: anti-inflammatory
Peppermint: reduces infection
Lemon: boosts alertness and energy, clears sinuses, and reduces congestion and allergic symptoms

Valerie Holbert, NCB-HWC, RYT-500 is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach and Registered Yoga Teacher, Reiki Master and Hyperbaric Technician. Working through her own past traumas and learning to be present and regulate her nervous system have been an integral part of her own healing journey—physically, emotionally and spiritually. Through mindfulness practices, self care practices and yoga along with changes in diet, lifestyle and stress management, Valerie changed her relationship with and experience of chronic pain, autoimmune issues and a Fibromyalgia diagnosis in her 20s. It's been an ongoing journey since then adding ancestral healing, reiki and energy work to the mix. She strives through her work to help others release what is no longer serving and connect to their most authentic and vital selves.
In her new practice, Nourish Center Asheville, Valerie brings an additional offering—Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Her husband suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2021 and immediately after coming home from the ICU she drove to Atlanta and rented a chamber. After seeing the benefits for his healing and learning of the many benefits, she purchased a new tank to share with clients here in WNC.
She believes it's important to nourish our souls and our cells, and that we all need support with both to truly find clarity, reconnect to our own inner knowing and implement steps to reach goals.
When she is not in the office, you'll likely find her kayaking on a local river or lake or walking trails within view of the water, walking her crazy dogs, staring at the moon and clouds or spending time with her husband and teenage daughter.
