  • Banco de Gaia - Ages of Gaia (preview)
At the end of July 2019, I was commissioned to make a track to celebrate the Lovelock Centenary conference held at the University of Exeter. The conference brought together some of the top climate scientists and academics from around the world on the occasion of James Lovelock’s 100th birthday. (He was the ‘inventor’ of the Gaia Hypothesis. And, yes, he was there and gave a fascinating talk).
To make the piece I recorded the speeches and atmosphere of the event and then blended these found sounds with music to make something which I hoped would capture the essence of the event. I also dragged along Patrick Dunn to make a video from the visual elements of the conference. It was an unusual and fascinating experience and everyone seemed really pleased with the results, and we are very happy to share them with you too.

  • Toby Marks and Andrew Heath - For Stone (West) Part 1
'For Stone (West), Pt. 1' is the first single off 'Motion', the stunning new album by soundcloud.com/tobymarksmusic (AKA soundcloud.com/bancodegaia) and soundcloud.com/andrewheatharts.
The track was inspired by a trip to Wales, where the pair visited The Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth and then plunged deep into Llechwedd Slate Caverns.

  • Sophie Barker - Gold Dust Woman (Banco De Gaia Gold Dub Woman Remix) (preview)
Earlier this year my Disco Gecko label helped Sophie Barker, singer with Zero 7, The Egg and more, break a 6 year silence by releasing of her 3rd solo album ‘Break the Habit’. Hailed as “a superb batch of original songs” by the Irish Times and “sublime” by The Crack, the album successfully blended her upfront live sound with more atmospheric, mood driven electronica.
In between festival appearances this summer, Sophie was busy commissioning remixes from across the globe and with ‘LSA’ has created the perfect companion to her original album.
Ranging from the lush orchestration of Murray Gold (‘Road 66’) to the dancefloor dynamite of James Monro (‘Let’s Start Again’), the tracks on ‘LSA’ soothe, seduce and scintillate, with Sophie’s vocals shining through them all. Other standout remixes include The Afropolitan’s exuberant take on ‘Don’t Give it Away’ and peak:shift’s shuffling reduction of ‘Breathe Me In’.
The breadth of styles and approaches is rare for a remix album but, despite this variety, all of the tracks sound at home here, making ‘LSA’ an album you can listen to from start to finish with no sudden shocks or changes of direction shaking your serenity. Thanks to Sophie’s peerless selection, “LSA’ stands up in its own right as a varied and beautiful collection.

  • Banco De Gaia - The Princess And The Sky Goat (preview)
For the fourth and final single from Banco de Gaia’s ‘The 9th of Nine Hearts’ album, he’s chosen a track that exemplifies what some would describe as the archetypal Banco sound: ‘The Princess and the Sky Goat’ is ambient dub at its finest, featuring a rolling bassline courtesy of James Eller (The The) and lush saxophone from Dick Parry (Pink Floyd).
The remixes are in a similar vein, with Ornah-Mental providing a dubby worldbeat rerub and Andrew Heath a spacious pure ambient wash.

  • Banco de Gaia - 91 (preview)
’91’ celebrates the ‘magical era of rave culture’ in the heady and halcyon days of the early ‘90s, and contemplates how much has changed in the 25 years since - not just the scene and the music, but the lives of those involved. Cue mining of sonics from that era, a lush Banco de Gaia production update and a minor key melancholic feel that has gained early support since the release of the critically acclaimed album.
On remix duty, Toby sought out two production outfits who would be able to understand his feelings for the bygone era and clock the ‘old skool' references, but at the same time deliver something 100% relevant to today's club scene.
Roll up soundcloud.com/mrcsuperfreq - and frankly who better to fit the bill. He’s turned in an unmissable and appropriately retrospective deep house wiggler. Channeling his early ‘90s self, but with an ear to today’s true underground, he takes the acid lines from the original and twists up the vocals into a late-night groover that will delight any dance floor.
Bennun and Healey’s genre-busting dub mix mashes up the melodies of the original, pays homage to its iconic acid sounds and in the breakdown even throws in an early ‘90s breakbeat for good measure. Then it’s fasten your seat-belts before all hell breaks loose with an absolute banger of a big bass line and 125 bpm 4/4 groove that’s guaranteed to energise.
