Adelaide-born drummer Joe Turtur had a quick rise to fame in the early '80s, with the band Heaven, who were signed to a determined little indie label called Deluxe, also home to a young bunch of hopefuls called INXS. Heaven who changed their name from Fat Lip, looked like they just might be the next AC/DC. Their singer Alan Fryer had, in fact, auditioned to replace Bon Scott. Soon after the core of the band – Fryer, bass player Lawrie Marlow, lead guitarist Bradford Kelly (ex-Swanee), and, a little later, rhythm guitarist John Haese and drummer Joe Turtur – relocated from Adelaide, they signed with AC/DC's former manager Michael Browning. The aim was always to get overseas, and within a year of releasing their debut album, Twilight Of Mischief, in 1982, that's exactly what they did, picking up the opening slots for among others, Judas Priest and Motley Crue. American guitar manufacturers Jackson even developed a Jackson Kelly model with the now sadly late guitarist. Within another two years, however, it was all over. Joe discusses very openly his time with Heaven as well as his post-band career which saw him tour as a part of the road crew and drum tech for some of Australia's hottest acts including the Divinyls. Joe has also catered for many national and international acts at Clipsal, Byron Bay Blues Festival, and RocKwiz Live touring show. Joe has had a remarkable career, evident in the stories that he shares throughout this great interview. Joe has recently begun playing again with YouBlues Band.

This week’s interview is with the youngest drummer that I have had the pleasure to chat with so far, a drummer that I suspect will become very well known in the not too distant future, Lachie Durrans! Sixteen year old Lachie is the drummer for the original 3 piece Adelaide band 'The Birds Are Spies' who last year won the RockFest 2020 Best Band Award. Lachie, who attends Sacred Heart College, was also the winner of the RockFest 2020 Best Drummer Award! I would like to thank the parent who suggested that I interview Lachie as well as Lachie’s parents for giving me permission to chat with their son for this podcast series, The Birds Are Spies for allowing me to include their music in the interview, and Lachie for making time to chat with me.

This week’s ‘Engine Room’ guest Jeff Algra, has certainly experienced the great highs and extreme lows of the music industry. During the early 90s Jeff was the drummer in the Australian rock band ‘Seven Stories’, who after gaining a lot of commercial airplay, had a major breakthrough when they were signed by the Sony label (then CBS records) to a five year record deal. The deal with Sony led to the critically acclaimed “Judges and Bagmen” album in 1990. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1991 Seven Stories were nominated for Breakthrough Artist – Single for "Sleeping Through Another War" (1990). "Sleeping through Another War" and "Walk through Babylon" were released by CBS as singles off the album. The band toured extensively throughout Australia supporting artists such as Midnight Oil, INXS, The Black Sorrows, Hothouse Flowers, Hunters and Collectors and Paul Kelly. High-profile producers T-Bone Burnett and Boom Crash Opera's Richard Pleasance were engaged by Sony for ‘Seven Stories' second album, “Everything You Want (Nothing That You Need”) (1993), which provided another two singles. The band toured Europe and North America to support the album. Seven Stories recorded a JJJ Live at the Wireless and had a string of singles before the whole of Sony was instructed to 'drop everything' and divert all energy to making Mariah Carey number one." Seven Stories subsequently disbanded in 1994.

Kyrie Anderson is one of Adelaide’s, if not Australia’s, most sought-after drummers. After completing a Jazz Performance degree at The University of Adelaide, Kyrie graduated with First Class Honors in 2014. While still at University, Kyrie toured Australia, Canada, and the UK with the 'Bearded Gypsy Band' and has since toured Europe three times with Kaurna Cronin. In 2018 Kyrie worked with Luke Creswell, the creator of 'STOMP', as Percussion Director for his Adelaide Festival performances of "The Lost and Found Orchestra."

Kyrie has also toured nationally as Musical Director for "Songs and Times" with Sam Cooke starring Gary Pinto; headlined the Royal Croquet Club with Russian feminist group 'Pussy Riot'; and performed with national and international jazz musicians at Adelaide Town Hall’s International Jazz Day, and at Melbourne’s Stonington Jazz Festival. Kyrie has played alongside many artists including James Morrison, James Muller, Adam Page, Emma Pask, Nancy Bates, and The Cat Empire, and performs regularly with Oh Pep!, Kate Fuller, Aaron Thomas, and Max Savage. just to name a few.

South Australian Music Hall of Famer 'Mark Meyer' joins me this week to chat about his amazing career. Mark is one of Australia's most recorded and toured drummers, who started his career gigging in Adelaide whilst in high school, eventually making the move to Melbourne where he joined 'Stylus' (who were the only Australian act to be released by Motown Records in the USA.) Mark's career really took off after 'Stylus' disbanded in 1979 when he was invited to join the Queen of Pop 'Marcia Hines' Band, the first gig with Marcia being the '2SM Concert of the Decade' which was the biggest outdoor music spectacle, boasting a Who's Who of Australian musical talent, held on the steps of the Sydney Opera House on November 4th, 1979.

Mark has recorded in the vicinity of 400 albums both as a session drummer and as a band member of: Stylus, Marcia Hines, Richard Clapton, Moving Pictures, Jenny Morris, Divinyls, Mark Gillespie, Wendy Mathews, Dave Dobbyn, Keith Urban and Trisha Yearwood just to name a few. He chats about recording at 'Sound City', Van Nuys and 'The Record Plant' LA for the original Footloose Movie Soundtrack, and about how the band did not receive any royalties whatsoever for the track "Never" due to the bankruptcy of their U.S. record company.

I couldn't think of anyone better to spend the eve of 'get out of hard lockdown' with than Peter Kershaw, this unfiltered interview had me literally crying tears of laughter at times, and if you know Pete personally then you would be aware of his dry sense of humor and straight up honesty, both traits make him who is is and that's what I love about him. Pete, a self taught drummer, chats about his life, career highs and lows, and recent reunion with his former band mates from 'The Violets" and how that resulted in them not only remastering their debut album for it's 25th Anniversary this year, it rekindled the flame so much that Pete and Matt Cahill recorded new songs with Evoletah, who are an original art jazz rock band from SA, their album launch will be held during the Fringe Festival.  A laugh from start to finish including the 20 questions at the end, Enjoy! Mario Marino is one of those rare musicians who combine technical skill with great feel, making him one of Adelaide’s most popular drummers. Mario has toured with various bands both nationally and internationally and has represented the Adelaide Roots & Blues Association (ARBA) twice at the International Blues Challenge which is held every year in Memphis Tennessee; his first time was with Lazy Eye Band, it was during the second time with the band One More Mile that I got to know both Mario and his son Michael.

Mario was educated at the Elder Conservatorium of Music (the Con), which is Australia's senior academy of music, located at The University of Adelaide. When he isn't performing Mario teaches at The Adelaide College of the Arts. During this interview, we discuss how Mario first became interested in drumming as well as various bands that he has performed with over the years.
