THE 'MURRAY DELTA JUKE JOINT', (formerly 'The Wreckers'), has undergone an amazing transformation since David Lloyd and Greg Button decided to take on the Live Music Venue in 2020. When I interviewed David for The Engine Room (S2E8), he talked a bit about the venue and I wanted to see what it was like, as my band had played at there in 2019. I decided to check it out on the same weekend that "The Fallen Saints" were playing there, I attended the gig on the Saturday night (footage available from gig on my Facebook page and YouTube), and went back on the Sunday to chat with the new venues owners. Background: Greg and David had their eyes on this venue for a while, having said that if it ever became available they should get it. The opportunity came along at a time when venue owners worldwide were bracing themselves for the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. About half of the world's population was under some form of lockdown by April 2020, government's implemented measures to attempt to slow the spread of the Coronavirus and flatten the curve. Venues were closed, and with no way of knowing how long for, many feared permanent closure. With the C-19 Pandemic crippling the Music Industry overnight, the last thing on most people's minds would be to take on and renovate a Venue, but for Greg and David it was perfect timing, as I discovered during my recent visit to the MDJJ.

The Murray Delta Juke Joint is on the Fleurieu Peninsula, in Australia's first Cittaslow Town, Goolwa. Once a thriving River Port – the last on the Murray River before it reached the Southern Ocean, and the only place in Australia where paddle steamers and steam trains met to carry produce inland for shipping overseas. Greg and David fill me in on some of Goolwa's colourful River Port history; the Goolwa Hotel where the figurehead from the Mozambique, (a ship wrecked off the Coorong coast in 1854) can be seen, and other information leading to me finding out why they named the venue (which is modelled on the juke joints of Louisiana and New Orleans) the Murray Delta Juke Joint!

Moni Lashes (Monica Majcen), mother of 2 and matriarch of the Adelaide, South Australian Rock n Roll band "The Babes" joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss her musical journey. The Babes who formed in 2011, are: Moni Lashes on drums, her sister Donna D on lead guitar, their brother Corey Stone on bass, and a brother-from-another-mother, JD on lead vocals. Moni has a unique addition to her Pearl Drum Kit drum kit which is partially a Harley Davidson! They have toured extensively throughout Australia, the U.S.A, Japan and the Middle East, playing sold out shows, and recruiting new members to their official fan club, the "Rock n Roll Gang". The Babes' debut tour of the U.S.A in 2018 included sold out shows at: Whisky A Go-Go supporting LA Guns, featured artists at Cruefest Hollywood Festival at the Whisky A Gogo, performing at Las Vegas' renown Count's Vamp'd twice, seven shows at Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, including 3 sets at TV-famed venue Full Throttle Saloon, which draws 500,000 biker rock n roller lovers, and a live national TV appearance interview and performance on Las Vegas Morning Blend TV program to 2 million viewers. 2019 saw The Babes debut tour of Japan to HUGE energetic crowds in Tokyo, and Kyoto, and they were invited to perform for the troops in the Middle East, performing shows in Iraq to the Allies including USA, Australian, Italian and Swedish soldiers.

Jazz drummer BEN RILEY joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his drumming journey. When in High School Ben was taught by Ray Haughn, who introduced him to the Ted Reed book 'Syncopation For The Modern Drummer', he began having private lessons when he was in year 10 with Laurie Kennedy, and had his first paid gig while in school filling in for Ray Haughn in the band 'Polished Brass'. Ben continued his studies at the Adelaide University under the guidance of lecturer Laurie Kennedy. He met Kym Purling and Tim Bowen during this period, they formed the first Kym Purling Trio. The trio received wide recognition all around Australia and also served as the rhythm section for many of Australia's leading jazz musicians and vocalists. During the mid 90s, he also recorded his first albums, Trio Juice, Catherine Lambert & The Kym Purling Trio, and Let's Swing! Ben was a member of the Kym Purling Trio up until Kym moved to the United States in 1998. Following Kym’s departure in 1998 David McEvoy was recruited, forming the Boss Trio. After graduating from the Elder Conservatorium in 1994, completing a Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz Performance, Ben travelled overseas to study drums with some of his favorite players including Kenny Washington. During the interview Ben mentions his fascination with Roy Haynes drumming in the "Matrix", which is the second track on the Chick Corea album "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs", and was reinspired during this interview to complete his transcript of it. Ben is a member of The Airbenders, a Jazz Organ trio that formed in 2009 as part of the Artist in Residence initiative run by JazzSA. They quickly became one of the most exciting groups to see in Adelaide. Led by Hammond organist Paul White the band also has the incredible James Muller on Guitar, they have been the resident Tuesday night band at The Gilbert Hotel for 9 years!

S2 E32 The Engine Room Drummer Andrew Griffiths, Andy started learning drums December 1973, and has over 40 years experience in performing, recording and songwriting throughout Australia, having spent 7 years in Sydney and Melbourne as part of his Professional playing career. His first Adelaide band was the very first Punk/New Wave band in Adelaide "Black Chrome", Simon Stretton - vocals, guitar, Simon Dillon - bass, Andrew Griffiths - drums, Black Chrome played their first gig under the name of Fury on the 27th of July 1975 in the Little Theatre at the Adelaide University.

Andy is the owner, manager, and Drum Teacher of 'Frets and Stix Music', which was established in 1992.

Bands summary: Black Chrome 1975-78, Squawk 79-80, Manic Depression 1981, Sidewinder 1981, Matriark 1982, The Dagoes 1983-84, These Elements 1985, Out Of The Blue 1987-90, Rogue Torpedoes 1990-92, Sly Tactics (fill in gigs), Bluestone 1992- 94, Bad Penny 1995- 1996, Blind Tiger 1996-97, Guess throughout the mid 90’s and into the mid 2000’s, New England Stone 1998–2000, name change and line up change to Paintbox 1999 -2001, and has filled in for many others over the years. Currently recording demos of his own new and old unreleased material, with the view to record, release and gig 2021-2022.

Preview of S2 E32 Andrew Griffiths, author of "Progressive Rock Drumming", Business Owner/ Manager 'Frets & Sticks Music co' Andy joins me in The Engine Room this week to chat about his career. This is a preview of one of Andy's many stories that he tells during his interview. This is part of his memorable gig stories, when he explains how the Adelaide band "The Dagoes" broke up during their gig at "The Tivoli Hotel." Andy has over 40 years experience in performing, recording and songwriting throughout Australia, having spent 7 years in Sydney and Melbourne as part of his Professional playing career. His first Adelaide band was the very first Punk/New Wave band in Adelaide "Black Chrome", Simon Stretton - vocals, guitar, Simon Dillon - bass, Andrew Griffiths - drums. Alan Griffiths, younger brother of Andrew,  joined the band for the second half of 1977 as the vocalist, this enabled Simon Stretton to concentrate fully on playing guitar. Simon then played guitar and sang through the rest of Black Chrome's existence. The band released a single in 1978 Australia's God/We Are Tomorrow.

The Dagoes were a rock band from Adelaide that was the catalyst in 1979 for Doug Thomas to create Greasy Pop Records, Andy was their drummer for one of the bands lineups, and this preview explains how that band broke up.

Andrew Griffiths, is also the internationally recognized author of "Progressive Rock Drumming", which is a comprehensive, lesson by lesson guide covering all aspects of playing drums in a group. Studies on: solos, rolls, fills, and syncopation. Within the three main sections of the book, a lesson by lesson structure has been used to give a clear and carefully graded method of study. Music theory is gradually introduced to help the player understand the material being presented and enable them to create their own rhythms and beats.

Andy is the owner, manager, and Drum Teacher of 'Frets and Stix Music', which was established in 1992, Andy is supported in the shop by his wife Danielle Griffiths and Zak Taylor. Update 1: When I first interviewed Joe Turtur it was just before he was to go into hospital to have part of his colon removed. Joe had T3 Colon Cancer, and was not given a guarantee that he would wake up from the surgery. Thankfully Joe did wake up, he spent 17 days in hospital, and has been living with a Ileostomy Bag while his colon recovers from the surgery. Joe is looking forward to having the bag removed on June 24th, he has had 2 pathology reports back advising that he no longer has cancer which is fantastic news.

Update 2: Joe had recovered enough to work at this years BLUESFEST in April, unfortunately due to one local case of transmission, which happened less than 24 hours before the gates were due to open, the festival was shutdown by Public Health Order, this sent shockwaves through our Music industry and traumatised everyone who had been working on presenting BLUESFEST. Six weeks later, BLUESFEST was re-scheduled, the festival will be held in October with a full lineup of the absolute best Australian artists, and Joe will be back feeling fitter and healthier. This October, BLUESFEST will be the first major festival to return, since COVID-19 struck, with a multi-day, multi-stage, camping event and almost all the artists due to play at Easter will return to play, with the addition of MIDNIGHT OIL, who will be headlining the opening Friday night. Update 3: Joe Turtur has been sacked from his 80s Metal Band HEAVEN, as a result of his initial BAND IT ABOUT Interview, and had to find out this shocking news via Social Media! Joe explains what happened during this interview, and I rewind back to the comment that led to him being sacked. I believe that this was extremely unfair, and I look forward to hearing what my listeners think about this turn of events. Joe has plans for a new band, which he talks about during this interview.

Sue Filmer joins me this week in The Engine Room to discuss her musical journey which began with Sue being a trained dancer. Sue was born in New South Wales and moved to Adelaide when she was 20 to attend the only Contemporary Dance Course on offer in Australia at the time, which was at Flinders University. Sue worked in various jobs while studying and at one stage was employed to dance at events in Adelaide, prior to joining her first band 'Click Clack' as a percussionist.

Sue has always loved music, right from her earliest memories of going to see her father who was a professional musician in NSW, performing with the Elizabethan Orchestra, Jazz with Jim Barnard, Black & White Minstrel Shows, Big Bands, Opera's and Ballets. Sue took up percussion in her 20s, she was sharing a house with musicians and wanted to be able to jam with them, so she began having lessons with Jim Bailey. Sue continued to play with various bands until taking time off to raise her 2 daughters. In 2016 after being encouraged by her husband and brother to start drumming again, Sue and her husband Danny began performing together as the Duo SUEDAN. The duo perform Blues/Roots and World Music, they also run an Open Mic once a month at the Ekhidna Winery, McLaren Vale.
