Hair metal meets grunge—and the hooks hit just as hard as the riffs. Meet Ragdoll, the Australian hard rock trio blending melodic vocals, heavy grooves, and explosive guitar playing. JR and Gary discover why fans of Whitesnake and Alice in Chains should give this Perth band a listen.
Recorded in person at Edinburgh Fringe, guitarist Leon Todd reveals how Ragdoll rescued a collapsed US tour, why they toured America five times before Australia’s East Coast, and what keeps their music heavy without sacrificing melody. An honest, funny conversation about guitars, DIY touring, and finding your audience beyond the algorithm.

Bernie Dieter is the queen of punk cabaret: a Weimar-inspired performer blending original songs, burlesque, circus, satire, audience chaos, and a killer live band. JR catches up with Bernie in Edinburgh, Scotland during the Fringe Festival to talk about celebrating freaks and outsiders, writing fearless songs, turning cabaret into a rock concert, and why the music is always at the heart of the show.
From Lick My Pussy and Dick Pick to devastating ballads and full-room drinking anthems, Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabaret is funny, sexy, political, vulnerable, and impossible to put in one box. This is a live, in-person Fringe interview—and an episode you should absolutely watch, not just listen to.

Muddy Ruckus is a two-piece band from Maine blending psychedelic rock, punk blues, Americana, and swampy roots music into a sound much bigger than their lineup suggests. With Ryan Flaherty’s multi-amp guitar setup and Erika Stahl’s suitcase kick drum, this duo delivers dark lyrics, explosive live performances, and unforgettable visuals.
JR and Gary explore the band’s evolution, unusual equipment, creative process, and struggle to reach more listeners without losing sight of the music. If you enjoy independent rock, blues, Americana, and hidden musical gems, discover Muddy Ruckus on Bands You’ve Never Heard Of.

Darrel Herbert played guitar with the Toadies during the Rubberneck era, worked with Nile Rodgers, and has now built a new solo project from the ground up: Visual Super Product. His latest album, Crazy Fast, blends sharp guitar riffs, analog synths, punk energy, pop hooks, and lyrics that dig beneath the surface.JR and Gary talk with Darrel about the rare Ibanez pedal that inspired the project’s name, his years with the Toadies, writing songs at 4 a.m., recording his own drums, and why he says, “I’m not happy unless I’m writing and writing and writing a lot.” If you love indie rock, post-punk, garage rock, synth rock, and music with a little grit, this episode is for you.www.bynhopod.com0:00 - Remembering Dolly Parton3:24 - The Rarest Guitar Pedal11:03 - Meet Visual Super Product11:59 - Darrel Herbert and the Toadies18:56 - “Come On Back”25:38 - “You’re a Ghost”30:55 - “True”38:58 - “All the Way to Today”44:31 - Interview with Darrel Herbert1:26:34 - Songwriting, Guitars, and What’s Next#VisualSuperProduct #DarrelHerbert #Toadies #PossumKingdom #CrazyFast #IndieRock #AlternativeRock #SynthRock #GuitarPedals #IbanezSK10 #NewMusic #MusicDiscovery #BandsYouveNeverHeardOf #BYNHOPod
Want to know what life is like for working musicians living in Ukraine right now? We gotchu.
Somehow JR stumbled on to a combination of music genres all in one band that we've never featured on the show before. Alt-rock, jazz rock, math rock, funk, bossanova, and more, all in one band, Bah-Bah Genesis.
They started putting out music during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and they keep making music. JR introduces Gary to Bah-Bah Genesis, creating the band's newest fan, and then we get to interview the band from Kyiv Ukraine.

We started this one differently. No theme song. No intro. Just the video for "Desert Moon" — dark, shot in a Savannah swamp at midnight with one light on the back of a truck. That's your introduction to Dallas Wax.
Ryan Dallas Wax (yes, that's his real name) moved from Peachtree City, Georgia to New York City, found four other Southern guys who'd all ended up there, and formed a five-piece band playing punk-soaked psychedelic blues rock that Gary compared to Billy Idol stumbling into a Sturgill Simpson record. They've been on tour. They just booked Austin City Limits Festival. Their debut album Metanoia drops June 19th. And they sent us the first track — "Bluff" — a week early.
His mom called the Burt Show. He showed up late. He had no shoes on. It was a great time.

Most gigging musicians have no idea what they're actually making per hour. Cliff Adams did the math — and it wasn't pretty.
After 120 gigs in a year, Cliff (jazz pianist, IT veteran, former #1 Uber driver in Cincinnati) realized his gigs were often paying less than minimum wage once drive time, setup, and rehearsal were factored in. So he built MoneyGigs — an app that tracks gigs, rates venues, and tells you exactly what you're worth before you say yes.
This is a special industry insider episode. No music discovery — just an honest conversation about the business side of being a gigging musician.

Stick around to the end. The opening track from Yes Officer's brand new album — Ignore the Town Crier — plays in fullafter the credits.
Jeremy Harnum is a one-man band from St. John's, Newfoundland making "loud and abrasive music for those who like loud and abrasive music." He grew up in a town of 450 people. Came out in 2018. Taught himself to record. Made three albums entirely alone. Then a Grammy-winning LA producer — the guy behind Adele, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, The Greatest Showman — bought an old church in Jeremy's tiny hometown and started a record label. Jeremy sent a cold pitch. That became Ignore the Town Cryer, out now.
JR found this band while researching Newfoundland for a community theater production of Come From Away. Hefound a podcast called Off Da Rock Radio, went through 25 artists, and landed here.
In part one, Gary hears four songs, from 2017 to the brand new single. In part two, Jeremy joins live.

Stick around to the end of this one. There's a prize.
Susanna B is a New York-born, LA-based singer-songwriter with a voice that lands somewhere between Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow — and a story that goes way deeper than that. Daughter of a celebrated Broadway composer. Actress. Foster and adoptive mom. Led a weekly choir for formerly incarcerated men for three years. She's been making music through all of it. Only now does she have a team behind her.
In part one, JR plays Gary four songs including her brand new single. In part two, Susanna joins live — and at the very end, she sent us something nobody else has heard yet.
