Banish the Bomb with Footprints and Bike Tracks

Listen Later

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. It’s also time again for the NPT (The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) review at the UN. Throughout April 2015, Footprints for Peace are walking, cycling and running from Oak ridge, Tennessee, the site of the manufacture of the first atomic bomb, to New York City for the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) review, an event which occurs only once every five years. Jim Toren, one of the organisers of Footprint for Peace speaks about the walk, cycle and run, as well as some of the nuclear history in the USA, such as the disastrous Three Mile Island accident. Ralph Hutchison, coordinator of the Oakridge Environmental Peace Alliance, speaks about the history of activism in Oak ridge and the importance of the Non Proliferation Treaty Review. A short recording of Dr Farhang Jahanpour, expert in peacebuilding efforts, also features in this edition of the Radioactive Show.
