I picked up this tune from a recording by the Corn Potato String Band. I think it sources to Jim Smoak & the Louisiana Honeydrippers, who also recorded it. Banjo is tuned aEAC#E.
What's a deadnin' (I had to look it up too)? It's an archaic term used by early settlers to describe a spot in a densely forested area where the trees have died and the spot can be used as farm land. Generally, white settlers would girdle the trees to kill them, rather the cut them down. At least, this is what I have gathered from reading some old sources.
