Banjo Hangout Newest 100 Clawhammer and Old-Time Songs

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 4/21/17, this version comes from North Carolina fiddler (born in TN) Bill Hensley. The alternate title, Whip the Devil Around the Stump fits the music, especially when played at Mr. Hensley's incredible speed.

My highly idiosyncratic version of Spring Creek Gal combined with my slightly idiosyncratic Moses Hoe Your Corn.

Another version of Magpie, this time I'm getting acquainted with my new banjo (Rickard White Laydie Half-Spun).

A fine fiddle tune from West Virginia.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 4/15/17, Roscoe comes from the fiddling of Kyle Creed, who previously I only was familiar with as a well-known banjo picker and maker. It's a good dance tune.

This a tune that our band Sugar Pie learned from Mark Tamsula and Richard Wither's lovely CD Up in the Batten House. The tunes on Mark Tamsula's CD are all collected in western PA by Samuel Bayard. Fiddle: Jane Rothfield; banjo: Hilarie Burhans; guitar, Kellie Allen; bass, Sabra Guzman

Favorite fiddler of mine from Kentucky (and of course Bill Monroe's best fiddling Blue Grass Boy ever), Kenny Baker, wrote this tune but stated that the title was just a title and didn't have meaning. The CD cover of Kenny's fiddling, however, called Spider Bit the Baby, sure showed a scary painting! A shout-out to Don Huber for introducing me to the song and to Linda Gunderson who -- quite coincidentally -- loaned me that very CD at the same time. It's the first tune I've learned from it and continue to joyfully pursue Kenny Baker's many musical offerings.
