Banjo Hangout Newest 100 Clawhammer and Old-Time Songs

Tunaday #374 - In D variant tuning (aDACD).

Samuel Bayard, the famous tune collector from Pennsylvania, had several versions recorded of Carrolltown Breakdown, popular during his day. He claimed it's related to Buffalo Gals, so I tacked that one at the end for comparison. The first comes from one of the sources, Wilbur V. Neal, who was an elderly man when recorded in the 1950's. The second comes from the modern arrangement by Mark Tamsula and Richard Withers, based on the source fiddled recording of Harry "Tink" Queer, in his 50's in the 1950's, and the last is a snippet of the traditional Buffalo Gals.

This recording of the Henry Reed tune was taped in April, 2015, at a private jam I used to attend every Thursday night. The musicians are Linda Henry, John Reddick, and Mike Roguska on fiddle, Jerry Dallal on guitar, and Ed Britt playing clawhammer banjo, and me playing banjo three finger style. I've uploaded it for the 8/28/20 Old Time TOTW.

Recorded via email for Tune of the Week. Banjo by Paul Perkins, fiddle by me.

"Jack of All Trades" is a tune I learned from Melvin Wine and has over the last five years, or so, become almost a standard in some of the jams that I play in. From the Vintage Wine cassette notes "This old tune comes from Melvin's father." I did try to find more information on the tune on line and from Drew Beisswenger, who wrote a Ph.D. thesis on Melvin, but we both came up blank.

Key of G. 10 3/4" vintage pot with a new custom 5 string neck.

Another work in progress. A well known tune made famous by Dock Boggs. Only a couple of verses memorized.
