Listening to Joni Mitchell and Carl Baron's vocals, I came up with this banjo solo in sawmill tuning, like Carl plays it for this week's Tune of the Week called Me and My Uncle -- a kind of modern-day cowboy ballad.

Bluegrass with tuba accompaniment and solo recorded at one of our jam sessions.

Our last jam session took place on the terrace of the restaurant where we usually play. A tuba player passed by on his bicycle, stopped to listen and was invited into the session. This is the first tune we played together.

I used my 2021 RK 76 Elite banjo, and for the 25 second long introduction I used a Roland TB-3 effects box.

This is the first time I have recorded anything in years.

This is a fun little tune, happily re-discovered by Uncle Dave Sturgill years ago after he remembered it as a boy in Piney Creek, North Carolina, then heard it no more until it re-surfaced with an old fiddler in Seattle, Washington. Our TOTW presenter, Andy Alexis, tells us it was a favorite song of his predecessor Piney Creek Weasels banjo player, Rick Abrams, and that Rick had excitedly learned it at the Mt. Airy contests.

I composed this Celtic-sounding fiddle tune while camping deep in the forests of the Adirondack Mountains back in 1991. I wrote the melody out on a cardboard box so that when I got through camping I would remember the tune and be able to play it on my fiddle which was not with me on the camping trip. "Braw Birks" is Gaelic ( I think so) for "Beautiful Birches".
