For the Tune of the Week, 12/13/19, Henry King (d. 1856 - 1914) is the many-great grandfather of the talented composer, Trevor Stuart, who passed away but is survived by his brother Travis. They honored their ancestor and educated us a bit about their family history (you can read the liner note in the TOTW thread). The tune has a familiar first part and is then new to me. I chose cello banjo to make the fingering easier in a tuning equivalent to double C.

Recorded a few years ago, now I prefer clawing this lovely piece, but the first arrangement I tried was with 3-finger picking.

gCGCC - Based on 1937 fiddle recording by William H. Stepp.

Played on Cedar Mt. Brainjo Hobart model.

Another January 1985 live recording of Takoma Valley Band/Nothin' Hokey. Even though the song had by this time been covered by bluegrass artists, including Keith Whitley in 1982, we learned the song from its original version on Jonathan Edwards's 1977 album, "Sailboat." It had been part of our repertoire almost from our start in 1980.

As with The Tracker, this is probably a direct line out to tape from the PA head. Same mix that went to the speakers.

Live recording from January 1985 of my band performing our cover of The Tracker, a John Hadley song recorded by Country Gazette on their album "All This And Money, Too." The Gazette version changes key for the musical outro. We couldn't pull that off.

I believe this recording is a direct output to tape from the PA head. For about 6 months we had a weekly Thursday night gig at the restaurant/bar attached to the Quality Inn in Bowie, Maryland. It was some time during this run that we changed our name from Takoma Valley Band to Nothin' Hokey. Why, I'll never know.

A lovely old air by O'Carolan, the famed Irish harpist, born in 1678.
