  • Ora Lee
A tune my fiddler showed me at our last rehearsal. Can't get it out of my head at the moment.

  • Shaking Off the Acorns (TOTW)
For the old-time TOTW, 9/7/18, Shaking Off the Acorns comes from the playing of West Virginian fiddler Edden Hammons, who would have been 113 years old today. Most everybody else records it as Shaking Down the Acorns and it's definitely one of my favorite tunes of all time. It's modal and the first part has 12 measures with three 4-measure phrases.

  • Vance no More
Me on fretless banjo and Rory Robertie on fiddle. Even though we squared it up a bit from the original, it's still a very crooked tune.

  • Stony Brook Moonshine
One of several tunes we can hear based on the fiddle playing of the famous American painter William Sydney Mount of Stony Brook, NY. Notated on January 11, 1859 and played not long ago by contemporary fiddler, Gilbert Ross, Stony Brook Moonshine was recorded on one of Mount's three patented Cradle of Harmony fiddles.
Perhaps you're familiar with Mount's painting The Banjo Player, which was the example for the modern minstrel banjo building of George Wunderlich and other luthiers.
I wonder about the title of this tune, Stony Brook Moonshine.
