sound test of 6-string 14" SuperWoodie

Lost Grove Gourd Banjo #2 in modal tuning.

John Ray "Doc" Corn, recorded Oct 31 1976.

Me trying to channel my inner Pete Seeger. Trigger warning : I do attempt to sing in this one.

About the song, Alouette is an old french-canadian tune. Here is an interesting wikipedia article about the songs origins.

I decided to re-record this much closer to the original; I have been working on finding an authentic spaghetti western guitar tone and then adding baritone banjo. I want to make baritone banjo part of the spaghetti western sound.

A rough first rehersal recorded by cell phone in living room. Many mistakes and very early solo attempts. But it has a nice groove, I think. And the sound of the 1890s German parlour guitar is just spectacular.

I have had this banjo for a few weeks now and am finding that it is very different from playing a tone ring banjo. When played alone, without other instruments, I actually hear many more tones (the notes are not quite as stable, and there are more subtleties). In that regard, I think it is less forgiving than a tone ring banjo in some circumstances. But when mixed with other instruments, the subtleties are absorbed and there is a linear quality. This seems to provide some leeway when playing with others, but may make detailed work more difficult. It really is very interesting to switch to a tone hoop banjo. I like the banjo quite a bit. It is light, but has a very solid feel. It is also very lively and vibrates from one end to the other.

I've always been a fan of honky - tonker ''Lefty Frizzel'', who wrote this one, and plenty more classic country songs, including .... ''If You've Got The Money Honey I've Got The Time,'' ''That's The Way Love Goes,'' and ''Always Late For Your Kisses.''

Out of the blue, my original partner in this collab. unfortunately, had to pull out .... so I called on BHO mate of mine ''Laurence,'' to join in with me, to complete the job .... thankyou ''Big L.'' Yours truly on plectrum banjo, Laurence on 5st. banjo. Thanks for tunin' in, Don.

In 4st. forum topic .... ''Don't Stay Away 'Till Love Grows Cold''

(JD) Jason Davis playing my Ward prewar Gibson that I am selling on banjo hangout.
