For the old-time Tune of the Week, 3/27/15. This tune comes from Mississippi fiddler Stephen B. Tucker (b. 1859). It was recorded recently by Bigfoot with Rhys Jones fiddling. Check out the TOTW to learn more.
From the collection called "Now That's a Good Tune: Masters of Missouri Fiddling" this tune was learned from Bill Katon (1864 - 1934) by Bob Walters who taught Cyril Stinnett who taught Charlie Walden. I'm learning about these venerated Missouri fiddlers and you can hear all the tunes on the Slippery Hill website.
From Missouri fiddler Cyril Stinnett, this tune was taught to me clawhammer style by Adam Hurt and then suggested that I arrange it for 3-finger picking style. Here's the result. You can compare it with the clawhammer version I learned and see what you think. Both are challenging!
Roscoe Holcomb's version. Two-finger thumb lead. The tuning is fDGCB, but I played this on the long-neck capoed at the first fret, so it's really d#CFA#C.
Recorded with my friend Don Couchie on fiddle. Uploaded for the Tune of the Week, February 27, 2015. I am picking my semi-fretless Tubaphone, in open D tuning (aDF#AD).
