This has been one of the most popular tunes with old-time musicians for a long time and was the subject of the Tune of the Week a while back. This arrangement is first mine, then Kentucky fiddler Ed Haly's via Adam Hurt. My favorite version, which influences me in my arrangement, comes from bluegrass extrodinaire banjo player Craig Smith. He and Adam live within blocks from each other, so here they come together musically.

An old favorite that I recently played on the radio.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, based on Kyle Creed playing and Brad Leftwich's Round Peak Style book. Lots of Galax licks in the A part and slides in the B part.

Kentucky fiddler John Salyer did the source recordings on both Lost Boy and Lost Girl. They're quite similar. The A parts differ, but the chordal flavor is the same and together they make a natural medley. Bruce Molsky recorded a CD with the title Lost Boy. Adam Hurt's Lost Girl on piano from his Insight CD inspired me to work on it.

I like the way the modes change in this tune--from minor in the A part to mixolydian in the B part. It was also interesting to play the minor sound out of open G tuning--I had to avoid hitting the second string unless it was fretted.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 8-8-14. I learned this from Adam Hurt who learned it from Jarred Nutter, who learned it from Bobby Taylor, who learned it from Clark Kessinger. Adam calls this the "folk process in action." It's the only 3-part Durang's Hornpipe I've heard and Adam plays it with lots more intricate variations.

From the fiddling of Bruce Greene who learned it from Uncle George Nicholson (born in Laurel Co., KY in 1854). This tune reminds me of another I've heard before. For some reason the tune gives me a deep sense of deja vu when Bruce plays it. It's on his solo fiddle CD Five Miles of Ellum Wood.
