Ephesians 6:1–4 (ESV) Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 6:4–9 (ESV) “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Rules without relationship will likely lead to rebellion.

The words you use with your kids when they are young will become their self-talk to guide them the rest of their lives.

    Nourishing into flourishing

Seek to be the person you want your children to become.

    Be authentic and real.

You do not have to be perfect, but you do have to be real.

        Ephesians 5:22–33 (ESV)

22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

        • You get out of marriage what you put into it.
        • Marriage is an institution that God created.

        • Genesis 2:18 (ESV) Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”

Helper - One major error from our culture regarding marriage is that the highest goal of marriage is personal fulfillment.

“Fit for him” - Marriage has a leadership structure.

Genesis 2:24 (ESV) Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

          Marriage is union

Genesis 2:25 (ESV) And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

          Marriage is total intimacy

The greatest enemy of your marriage is passivity.

Marriages will now be plagued with conflict.

Opposites will ATTRACT and then ATTACK!

          There is no perfect spouse.
There is no perfectly compatible marriage on the planet.
The real problem of marriage is two individuals, selfish by nature, are seeking to exist in an institution that was created originally requiring selflessness.

          The greatest needs of husbands:

          • Acceptance
          • Respect
          • Trust
          • Intimacy

          • The greatest needs of wives:

            • Being cherished.
            • Covenant security.
            • Attention.
            • Intimacy
            • Into – Me – See

One of the biggest pain points for people today is family. “How do I save my marriage? How do I become a good parent?” Your people have questions; questions the Bible can answer. This series focuses on relationships in the home. Using the instructions found in Ephesians 5 and 6, this message set discusses love in the contexts of marriage, family, and parenting. In this series, real life issues like self-sacrifice, the transformation power of the Gospel, witnessing to the world as a family, and honoring God by honoring each other are explored each week.

              Ephesians 5:1–10 (ESV)

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Identity Formation

When we are grounded well and secure in our sense of belonging and identity with healthy close friendships, we have strength and security to be a friend to anyone in our world, including people who are very different than us.

                  Being a good friend:

                  1. Be present.

Proverbs 17:17 (NIV) A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity. #17 Being a good friend: 1-

                  2. Be reliable.

18 Proverbs 18:24 (NIV) One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

                  3.  Be helpful.

Proverbs 27:5–6 (NIV) Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

Proverbs 28:23 (NIV) Whoever rebukes a person will in the end gain favor rather than one who has a flattering tongue.

Proverbs 27:9 (NIV) Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.

John 15:13–15 (NIV) Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
