Bardown Breakdown

Mike Perez joins the boys this week to chat about how why he is a LA Kings fan and not an Anaheim Ducks fan, what it was like being the first band Pure Noise Records signed, and all things No Bragging Rights.

Power chords and crashing boards. Mikey and Tom talk music, hockey, and anything else that gets in their way. Tom and Mikey are lifelong friends that grew up on Long Island during the glory days of alternative music where our local bands were As Tall As Lions, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, The Sleeping, Envy on the Coast, you get the point. We spent many nights together at The Downtown, catching any pop-punk, indie, hardcore, or emo band that came through. This was not a phase, Mom! Fast forward 15 years and we are still just as passionate about the scene as we were during our girl jeans and youth XL band tees days. Tom and Mikey are also diehard New York Islanders fans, but as we like to say we are #notanislespodcast. As we got older we realized we can like more than one thing and running beside our love for music has always been our love for hockey. We have realized we are not alone in this thinking, actually there are many of us that love these two things! This podcast explores just how connected they are!

Today’s episode is brought to you by the letters ECHL! We finally got to have our good buddy Jennings Compton on, a wearer of many hats, including managing merchandising for Four Year Strong, Tour Manager for Movements, and a host of other artists, a fantastic stand up comedian, and an off-ice official for the ECHL! A scholar of all things ECHL (including the short-lived Grrrrrrenville Grrrrrrrowl), we talk growing up in an area without an NHL franchise and the community’s feelings on minor league hockey. We also touch upon the responsibilities of being the merch guy for your favorite bands, the importance of building relationships, and shutting down dance moms that want free merch. All this and more, so tune in and enjoy!

We here at Bardown Breakdown are quite the vinyl enthusiasts. Well, once of us nowadays. So, naturally, we dove at the opportunity to have Ian from Pure Noise on the pod. Among Ian’s contributions to the one of the best labels in the land is concocting the vinyl variants of Pure Noise’s catalog, and if you tune in, you’ll hear all about exactly how he conceptualizes some of the coolest vinyl variants that I’ve seen. Ian is a huge Kings fan, and we talk about Gretzky’s impact on West Coast hockey, LA’s two cup wins, and how his time on the road with Drive-Thru pioneers Finch in many ways led him to Pure Noise. Strap in and come along for the ride with us, and don’t mind Tom. He just couldn’t help himself in this one.

Episode #144 dives deep into the age old question, is a George Parros tattoo a good idea? Our guest, the acclaimed Gustavo Jaimes of Torch Tattoo in Anaheim seems to think so! Join us as we talk about Gus’ breakout moment in the industry, how being straight-edge led to opening brand new doors in music, his memories of the Ducks’ cup victory in 2007, his tenure at the infamous Chain Reaction, and a ton more. See if you can guess how many hockey players have actually done work on Gus himself. Hint: it’s above zero. If that ain’t crazy right there, I don’t know what is. Gus rules, a pleasure to get to know!

Episode #143 on Bardown Breakdown, and boy, did we pull a big fish! We had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Rishi, one third of Eternal Boy, and the founder of both Four Chord Music, and the Four Chord Music Festival, which will celebrate its’ 8th anniversary next year! We talk about how important labels like Drive-Thru and Vagrant were integral to the success of today’s music, how Four Chord has grown from small clubs to baseball stadiums, Eternal Boy’s newest record, and of course, Pens hockey. A true Lemieuxer if there ever was one. Is it actually possible to remain humble when you book Blink freaking 182 to headline your festival and when they can’t make it, you book Rise freaking Against in their stead? Listen in and find out! (spoiler - it is possible, cause the homie Rishi lives that humility every day).

Episode #142 screeching in hot, and on the heels of the release of the very excellent "Slowly Getting Better", we chat with Nick Malychuk from Equal Vision's Calling All Captains. Join us as we talk to someone who bleeds a slightly different blue and orange as us, giving us some insight into Edmonton's love for the Oilers, the writing and recording process of their newest record, the work that went into getting it pressed on vinyl, and, hell, we even launch into a dissertation about Canadian geography! Into that? Hope so, cause you're gonna get all of that and more!
