Βαίνειν (venin) is an ancient Greek infinitive meaning 'to be getting somewhere' in this case on a step or a pedestal. The first time you step onto something/setting your foundation is your Βάση.  Following the most common journey, Latin and then French, the word came to English around the 14th century and stayed.
