    50. Ketosis vs. ketoacidosis: the difference, and who's actually at risk

      People mix up ketosis and ketoacidosis all the time, so I wanted to clear it up.

      Ketosis is a natural, safe state where your body burns fat for fuel instead of carbs. It happens when your insulin comes down, like it does on a keto diet. Your body makes ketones in small amounts, and you get steady energy from them.

      Ketoacidosis is a completely different thing, and it's rare. It happens when there's a severe lack of insulin, so ketones pile up out of control and the blood turns dangerously acidic. The people who need to watch for it are folks with type 1 diabetes or LADA, people without a working pancreas, and people on certain medications like SGLT2 inhibitors.

      If you have type 2 diabetes, or you're lowering your insulin to get your insulin sensitivity back, your body still makes enough insulin to keep ketoacidosis from happening. Lowering insulin is safe for most people, and it's one of the best things you can do for your health.

      Did anyone ever warn you that keto would put you in ketoacidosis? I'd love to hear about it.
