Today I'm checking out the rechargeable LIR2032 batteries (or cells if you prefer) and their charger that I got in a recent mailbag.

The charger surprised me in a couple of ways.

Here's where i bought the charger: https://pileofstuff.ca/r/qquks

Based on the Charlotte Brontë novel, this drama depicts the trials and tribulations of young English woman Jane Eyre (Joan Fontaine). Orphaned and raised in an abusive home, Jane eventually becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls for its older aristocrat owner, Edward Rochester (Orson Welles).

I built the knock-off Enterprise-D from Star Trek the Next Generation.

Overall, I'm pleased with it and had fun during the build. It took about four days.

The fit and finish isn't as nice as real LEGO, and I tried to get some pictures of the small gaps between pieces. I only had one missing piece out of 3600.

The biggest challenge is organizing the 60+ bags of pieces as I worked my way through the build. Definitely have a plan for that, especially if you have kids running around.

I watched Jon Gjengset taking on the one billion row challenge and got interested in one small corner of it: parsing temperatures, and in particular parsing temperatures in a "branchless" style - with no if statements - to help the CPU run the code as fast as possible. In the end, the results were surprising.

After the stream I added a version of Jon's parse_temperature to the comparison. His version assumes we already know where the semicolon is, so I had to add code to find it, and I didn't use the SIMD code he used to do that because it requires unstable Rust. With those caveats, my version was 4x faster(!). However, I'm pretty sure we're going to need to find that semicolon ourselves if we take on the full challenge, so this is not a fair comparison.

Also after the stream I realised I'm pretty sure there is a simple improvement I can make to branchy to make it even faster...
