Doftana Prison was built in 1895 as a military penitentiary before becoming notorious for housing political prisoners. Conditions were severe: unheated cells, basic food, and harsh punishments for those incarcerated here.β
The prison remained active until 1947, after which it was repurposed as a museum under the communist regime, promoted as the place where Romaniaβs future leaders had endured hardship. Since the fall of communism in 1989, it has stood abandoned.β
