L’archéologie du changement climatique a beaucoup évolué avec la disponibilité de modèles paléoclimatiques et l’essor des techniques d’apprentissage automatique, particulièrement en écologie numérique. Ces développements ont transformé l’étude de l’impact des changements climatiques sur les populations humaines préhistoriques, car ils nous permettent d’élaborer des modèles d’adéquation de l’habitat (AH). Ces modèles nous permettent d’aborder la notion d’habitabilité et les paramètres climatiques et environnementaux impliqués. À l’aide d’outils géomatiques et de données anthropologiques, il est possible d’exploiter les modèles d’AH afin d’étudier les seuils d’habitabilité, leur influence sur la répartition spatiale des populations, et enfin d'élaborer des modèles prédictifs pour les campagnes de prospection archéologique.
