“Bat Chats” accompanies the making of the dance performance “Bat Dances” by co-hosts choreographer Kareth Schaffer and composer Jonas Hauer, which premiered at Tanz im August 2026 in Berlin,…
Germany. We explore first how bats, everybody’s favorite nocturnal mammals, perceive and move through the world. Then, the artistic strategies used to translate this scientific knowledge into a dance work are examined through interviews and radio experiments. Along the way, we consider how to make this work an aesthetically coherent experience for both seeing and visually impaired audiences. This podcast is in both English and German. If you only speak one or the other, we invite you listen anyway--what kind of experience can you have with only partial information?
„Bat Chats“ begleitet die Entstehung der neuen Tanzperformance „Bat Dances“ der Choreografin Kareth Schaffer und des Komponisten Jonas Hauer, die im August 2026 beim Festival „Tanz im August“ in Berlin uraufgeführt wurde. Wir untersuchen zunächst, wie Fledermäuse – die beliebtesten nachtaktiven Säugetiere überhaupt – die Welt wahrnehmen und sich durch ihr bewegen. Anschließend werden die künstlerischen Strategien, mit denen dieses wissenschaftliche Wissen in ein Tanzstück umgesetzt wird, anhand von Interviews und Radioexperimenten beleuchtet. Dabei überlegen wir, wie wir dieses Werk zu einem ästhetisch stimmigen Erlebnis sowohl für sehende als auch für sehbehinderte Zuschauer*innen machen können. Dieser Podcast ist sowohl auf Englisch als auch auf Deutsch.
