  • Episode 259: CGI Raider

Welcome back to our week in geek. This week we bring you our spoiler free and spoiler filled review of Tomb Raider. We also continue to watch through our streaming suggestions by reviewing Mute on Netflix. You’ll want to listen in on Bat’s extreme dislike for this movie, I found it particularly entertaining to see a reaction close-ish to BvS or TLJ. We discuss some of the ongoing news and we answer last week’s podquestion of what was your first Mature rated game.

This week’s fan streaming review from the Heterolifemate was Mute on Netflix. Now I kind of spoiled it in the intro, but we didn’t really like this movie. Bat absolutely HATED it and I just didn’t enjoy it. The world of a futuristic Berlin as the back drop was kind of interesting but the cast of characters and how they were haphazardly strewn about made the movie and over all mess. Both of us thought that the lost love plot was overly convoluted and the motivation for her dead at the hands of Cactus just didn’t really make sense to us. The overly elongated ending as well just stretched out what we were having a hard time following. I do like Bat’s idea of pitching a movie just about cactus and his partner, where neither of them know the others “dark secrets” and watch as they slowly discover. But that movie doesn’t exist and sadly what we’re left with was a Muted response of a movie. We both suggest you save your time and spend it somewhere else, perhaps on Altered Carbon.

This week’s streaming suggestion comes from our friend Buggs. He wants us to watch the Netflix produced live action adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist. While Bat hasn’t seen any of the anime I’ve watched and loved it all. I’m a little cautious going into this one after the Netflix Death Note movie. Even with it being a Japanese produced adaptation I’m still cautiously optimistic because I’ve been burnt before. I’m looking at you Attack on Titan live action!

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 258: We Love Michael B. Jordan

Welcome back to our week in geek. This week we continue to watch through our streaming suggestions (we’re so happy to have this ‘problem’) by reviewing Fruitvale Station on Netflix. We discuss some of the ongoing news and we answer last week’s podquestion of which winter Olympic sport would you participate in if given the chance.

This week’s fan streaming review was suggestion Fruitvale Station on Netflix. We had both heard how amazing Michael B. Jordan’s performance was in this movie and in that area we were not disappointed. Mind you yes we are biased and Love Jordan, but he really does do a damn good job acting. Our biggest detraction was the over use of “bruh” that just didn’t feel natural for the character he was playing. Unfortunately for this based on true story, the rest of the movie didn’t really bring us in, it felt more like a staged movie than a natural flow of someone’s final hours. We both agree that Jordan’s performance was worth the price of admission but just wish the rest of the movie was up to that level. We both say see the movie, if only for Jordan.

The fan-suggestion-palooza continues with this week’s streaming review of Mute coming from the Heterolifemate himself. From the director of Moon, an awesome movie that neither of us have seen yet, comes this strange futuristic tale of a Mute man in Berlin trying to find his lost love. You can find this movie on Netflix if you want to watch along.

  • Episode 257: 50 More Shades of Crap

Welcome back to our week in geek. With Bat back from his Disneyland vacation and me actually caught up on news for once we set out to discuss our streaming review of 50 Shades Darker. Spoilers, it’s pretty terrible. We discuss some of the ongoing news as well as this month’s free shit good shit with the Xbox Games with Gold and PS Plus. Last but not least we answer last week’s podquestion of what is your favorite Disney treat.

This week’s streaming review of suggestion of 50 Shades Darker was exactly what we expected… bad. I don’t really know what we can say more beyond what we said in our review of the first movie. It’s a movie and story without a soul. The characters have no real charisma and there is no depth in their interactions. I would argue that most daily soap operas have more drive that this movie. The fact that the numerous sexual scenes only bore us further really speaks to the movie. We will see the next movie… if only to warn you not to watch it. But please, spend your time elsewhere, do something better with your time.

Since we talked so much about having a lack of substance we are opting to watch Fruitvale Station on Netflix. We have heard numerous great things about he movie and about Jordan’s performance and can’t wait to watch this fan suggestion.

  • Episode 256: Black Panther

Welcome back to our on time week in geek. It’s kind of sad I have to say that, but I have had a bad track record of not getting these episodes out on time. Thank you to our listeners for checking in, we really do appreciate you so much for putting up with and supporting our shenanigans weekly. This week we actually got out to the theaters to see Black Panther so listen along for our spoiler free and spoiler filled review of the first Marvel movie of the year. We also review this week’s fan suggested streaming review of The Adventures of TinTin and an answer this week’s podquestion of what was the last CD you purchased.

Also as a heads up, Because Bat will be out of the state this week (Disneyland!) we will not be posting our regularly scheduled show next week. But please look forward to the following Monday for your regular SzG goodness.

This week’s streaming review of suggestion of The Adventures of TinTin was brought to us by our friend Mando. While neither of us were really engaged by this movie we did acknowledge that it was a rather beautiful production. But because we never really got attached to the character we just couldn’t get into the movie. With all of the non stop action and wacky set pieces we just had a sense of “been there, done that” and spent a large portion of the movie doing other things and getting distracted. We didn’t hate the movie but we also really can’t say we liked it. Bat gave it a cautious thumbs up and I gave it a thumbs down. Skip it or see it, the choice is yours.

This week we’re going to get dark, how dark you ask? Is it a numerical value maybe? Well, you would indeed be correct. We are getting exactly 50 Shades Darker. Come and join the joyous romp of this hilarious romantic comedy on HBOgo.

  • Episode 225: The Long Forgotten Delay

Welcome back to our…suuuuuuper delayed week in geek. This week we get down with some nerd news (including all of the Super Bowl movie teasers), review this week’s impromptu streaming suggestion of Cloverfield Paradox and answer last week’s question of ideal timeline from first tease of info for a video game to the actual release.

This week’s streaming review was brought to us as a surprise by Netflix, Cloverfield Paradox. We knew this movie was coming out but having it drop right after the Super Bowl was a hell of a Hail Mary… see I can sometimes make decent sports references. Coming to accept that J.J.’s Cloverfield movies are a new sort of Twilight Zone is really helpful when coming into this movie. Knowing that there are similarities between the 3 (so far) films can be confusing to anyone. But the constants are: there are monsters, humans have to deal with them in some way or form. We both love this concept and think it makes for some amazing movie going, plus the inclusion of Cloverfield gets the muggles in seats when they might otherwise opt out. The movie is beautiful and the acting is pretty damn good, along with a meaningful diverse cast. I think we both came to an agreement that while this movie is not perfect (though really, what movie is?) it was a damn enjoyable romp back into the Cloverfield Universe(s) and had tons of nods to Event Horizon. We both recommend giving this one a watch and agree that it would have been just as good in a theater as it was at home. Take some popcorn and strap in.

Okay, so now were going back for Mando’s suggestion of The Adventures of TinTin which you can watch this one on Netflix.

  • Episode 224: What Happened To TGIF

Welcome back to our week in geek. This week we get down with some nerd news, dish out some free shit good shit for PS+ games, review this week’s streaming suggestion of What Happened to Monday and answer last week’s question of what real life animal would you choose to be your mount?

This week’s streaming review was brought to us by TK, his suggestion was What Happened to Monday. Like many other Netflix original movies we can start off with saying that this movie needs some tightening up and it is very reminiscent of the likes of Gattacaand Children of Men. Mind you it’s not nearly the level of some of the bad Netflix original movies we’ve seen. We both enjoyed the movie, it had some good performances from Noomi Rapace and the over all story and concept was interesting. Where we wished to see more development was that of the different sisters individual personalities. With each sister having their very own day of the week, it would have been nice to see how diverse their desires and activities were. This stems from our biggest of wants, more investment in the different sisters. Once they started to kill them off it got harder and harder to tell which one was dying and which one you were rooting for. Give this one a shot, even if only to watch Rapace’s performance, but don’t be in any kind of rush.

So we were originally going to watch Mando’s suggestion of The Adventures of TinTin but then Netflix dropped Cloverfield Paradox right after the Super Bowl and we had to course correct to not miss a moment of the Cloverfield awesomeness…hopefully. You can watch this one on Netflix.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 223: and the Golden Globe Goes to…

Welcome back to our week in geek. there’s a little bit of a news this week with talk of the new Captain Marvel Costume, God of War release date and some (lackluster) Games with Gold. We review this week’s streaming suggestion of Dallas Buyers Club and answer last week’s question of which famous person, living or dead, would you have a beer with.

This week’s streaming review was Bat’s suggestion of Dallas Buyers Club. I guess you can say that both of us went in with rather high expectations, with the cast and the Golden Globe buzz. But what we got was a good but not great movie. The performances were good, but not life changing. The story was interesting but not as engaging as we were expecting. While this was a good movie and we would recommend giving it a watch we were a little miffed about the performances that McConaughey and Leto put forth.

This next week we’re watching a fan suggestion of What Happened to Monday on Netflix, brought to us by TK.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.

  • Episode 222: Discovering Nothing

Welcome back to our week in geek. We’re continuing the streak of slow news week and I almost forgot to watch this streaming review but Bat made sure that I finished the travesty that is Discovering Bigfoot. We also talk some nerd news, discuss some new trailers along with rumors of a new fable and we answer last week’s question of who would play you in your made for TV movie.

This week’s streaming review was from our friend Mando. For some reason he decided to torture us with the “documentary” of Discovering Bigfoot on Netflix. Wow… it’s almost hard to know where to begin. I guess we should ask someone if this is a mockumentary or is it an honest attempt at a documentary? As a mockumentary it’s wayyyy too long (running almost 2 hours) and the laughs are non present. Really I guess you could say it’s just unremarkable. Now as a documentary this is absolutely ridiculous and plan stupid. Well… if Bat and I had watched this blitzed it might have been fun. But on it’s own it was long, boring, ridiculous and lacked any real revelations that usually come with these sort of movies. If you are a fan of Bigfoot you would be better spent looking up TV episodes of Sightings from the 90’s. We both say give this one a pass… also this is proof that we will watch it if you recommend it. So, remember… “with great power, comes great responsibility.”

Okay with that terrible movie out of our way let’s move on to a real movie. Bat’s suggestion this week is Dallas Buyers Club on Netflix. I think we’re both prepared to cry and feel emotions on this one.

  • Episode 221: Cold Bat and Drunken Hammer

Welcome back to our brief week in geek. We’re continuing the streak of slow news week and I forgot to watch the streaming review so instead we have a very cold bat talking with a very drunk hammer about this week’s streaming review of Brawl in Cell Block 99 and answer this week’s questions of what is the most disgusting thing you’ve seen on South Park.

This week’s streaming review was the Vince Vaughn fueled Brawl in Cell Block 99 on Amazon Prime. Sadly I missed out on this movie and left all the fun to Bat. What he describes is yet another example of a streaming exception to our movie standards. As a streaming movie it’s okay but as a theatrical release this one just would have left us unfulfilled. Even with Bat’s love of Vaughn it just wasn’t enough to recommend this movie to others.

This week’s streaming review comes from our friend Mando and he wants us to get into some cryptozoology fun with Discovering Bigfoot on Netflix.

  • Episode 220: Bright Ideas for the Future

Welcome back to our week in geek. While it’s our second podcast into the new year and we’ve already hit a slow news week. So while we babble on about non nerdy things we also discuss this week’s streaming review of Bright and answer this week’s podquestion of what is your geeky New Year’s resolution.

This week’s streaming review was the Netflix original Bright. This movie has spawned a very large range of reviews from like to absolute hate. While we definitely see the issues that many others have with the missing lore we both gave the movie a like. I had better time with the movie than Bat but will say that the movie could really use a nice opening scrawl or scattered scenes to explain the world a little more. The one thing we both completely agree on is how much we loved the chemistry between the two cops. Soon enough you forgot that it was a Human and an Orc and thought of them just as an odd couple. Our big hope is that the sequel that is now confirmed builds upon the world that we want to know more about. Give this odd movie a try.

This week’s streaming review comes from Bat and is fueled by his love for Vince Vaugh. We’re watching Brawl in Cell Block 99 on Amazon Prime.

You can suggest a streaming movie that you want us to watch and review on future episodes that are on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime or HBOgo.
