When 9-year-old Debra May Helmick was snatched from her own front yard in broad daylight, investigators immediately suspected a connection to the Shari Smith case from two weeks before. Using behavioral profiling they narrowed their search. But even though the suspect continued making calls from payphones to the Smith household, forensics from Shari’s final letter gave them a lead on the culprit–one whose many warning signs and second chances would prove to be one of the most tragically preventable cases in memory.
