The plan would raise starting pay from about $41,000 to $58,000 in an effort to address a shortage of nearly 170 officers, improve morale, and attract top‑tier law enforcement talent. Set for a Metro Council vote next week, the raise would be funded through existing savings—not new taxes—and has already sparked increased interest from recruits and officers in surrounding departments. Morse says the boost is critical to sustaining patrols, staffing major events, and ensuring Baton Rouge remains safe as the city continues to grow.
