Battered Herons: An Inter Miami Podcast

Inter Miami has a serious problem: they can’t close out games.

We’ve talked about the defense all season, but for this episode of Battered Herons, we’re putting opinions aside and letting the numbers tell the story.

We’re breaking down every MLS goal Inter Miami has scored and conceded this season, separating them into 15-minute intervals to figure out exactly when Miami is at its best—and when the defense is most vulnerable.

And the late-game numbers are impossible to ignore.

Through the Columbus match, Inter Miami has conceded 12 goals after the 75th minute. Even more concerning, there have been six MLS matches where a goal conceded after the 75th minute directly changed a Miami win into a draw or a draw into a loss.

The recent trend has been brutal: late goals against Atlanta, Nashville, San Diego and Columbus have repeatedly cost Miami points—including the devastating 98th-minute winner in Columbus.

But there’s a fascinating twist: Inter Miami also scores a ton of late goals.

So is this really a fitness problem? A tactical problem? Game management? Substitutions? Midfield control? Or is Inter Miami simply playing a style that causes matches to become completely chaotic late?

We’re going deep into the numbers to find out.

This might be our most stat-heavy Battered Herons episode yet.

The Inter Miami hate has reached another level.

Over the last few days, there’s been plenty of criticism surrounding the Herons—from accusations of using the “dark arts” to complaints about how often Miami players surround and argue with referees when things aren’t going their way.

But how much of the criticism is actually deserved?

On this episode of Battered Herons, we’re digging into the conversation surrounding Inter Miami. We’ll discuss what people around MLS are saying, where we think the criticism is fair, where it’s being exaggerated and whether Miami needs to change some of its behavior on the field.

But this isn’t just an episode about THE HATE.

We’re also looking ahead.

We’ll go through Inter Miami’s remaining schedule, assess where the Herons currently stand and give our expectations for each of the games still to come.

After an inconsistent stretch of MLS results, a coaching change and the high of winning the Campeones Cup, what version of Inter Miami are we going to see down the stretch?

Is the criticism deserved? And what should we expect from Miami the rest of the way?

Absolutely brutal. Inter Miami was seconds away from escaping Columbus with a point—and then everything fell apart.

The Herons surrender a goal in the 98th minute and leave Columbus with a devastating 2-1 loss to the Crew.

On this episode of Battered Herons, we're going LIVE to react to one of the most frustrating endings of Inter Miami's season.

Miami entered the match severely undermanned because of international duty, and for most of the night it looked like the Herons might find a way to grind out a result despite those absences.

Instead, they walk away with nothing.

We'll break down the 98th-minute winner, how Miami allowed the game to get away, Kily González's tactical decisions and substitutions, the performances from players who received opportunities because of the international absences, and whether there were any positives worth taking from the night.

And then we have to address the bigger picture.

After winning the Campeones Cup and seemingly finding some new energy under Kily, Miami has struggled to turn that momentum into MLS results.

How concerned should we be about this team heading into the most important part of the season?

Seconds away from a point.

One final mistake. Zero points.

Let's talk about it.

Inter Miami finally has a trophy in 2026. But does winning the Campeones Cup change how we should feel about this season?

After a difficult stretch of results, Inter Miami defeated Cruz Azul to capture the Campeones Cup, giving the Herons their first silverware of the year.

On this episode of Battered Herons, we’re taking a second look at the victory now that the celebration has settled down.

Does winning a trophy salvage what had become a disappointing season? How much should the Campeones Cup mean to supporters? And after debating whether this competition even mattered before the game, does actually lifting the trophy change our perspective?

We’re also talking about Kily González’s first match in charge. He walked into Inter Miami and immediately won a trophy, but how much of what we saw can realistically be attributed to the new manager? We’ll discuss the tactical changes we noticed, his decisions and whether Wednesday gave us any clues about what Kily’s Inter Miami will eventually become.

Most importantly: where does Miami go from here?

One trophy doesn’t erase all of the problems we’ve seen, but could this be exactly the spark Inter Miami needed heading into the final stretch of the season?

We’ll finish the show by turning our attention to San Diego FC and previewing this weekend’s matchup as Miami tries to take the momentum from a championship night and finally turn it into sustained MLS success.

Champions on Wednesday. Back to work this weekend.
