Have you ever walked into a room and felt like the one person who doesn't belong?

Everyone else knows the words. Everyone else has the tidy history. And you're carrying something you'd rather nobody found out about.

Today we meet Rahab. She had no religious training and no good name, and she is the last person anyone would have picked. But after Jericho falls, Scripture gives us one quiet sentence: she lived among the Israelites. Not near them. Not on the edge of the camp. Among them. And her story doesn't stop there - she turns up again on the first page of Matthew's gospel, in the family line of Jesus.

God doesn't simply forgive our past. He weaves it in.

Your step today: Stop editing yourself before you come to God. Find two minutes in the car or in the kitchen and say the truest thing you can - not the tidy version, the real one.

Have you ever wanted to help someone, then stopped because of what your own people might say?
A princess by the Nile faced that exact moment - and chose kindness anyway.

In today's five-minute devotional we meet Pharaoh's daughter in Exodus 2:6. Everyone around her had been trained to see a threat. She saw a crying child. Her kindness cost her something at home, she never made a speech about it, and she let a young Hebrew girl help her.

We look at three things to hold onto: look properly, live with the awkwardness, and don't do it alone. Then one small step for today - one ordinary act of welcome to someone your circle has quietly decided not to see. And a reminder that kindness isn't how we earn our place with God. It's what happens when we know we already have one.

You can't fix it. You can't fight it. But there is something you can still do.

Miriam was only a girl. She couldn't stop the river or hold back the danger. But she stayed close enough to see - and that changed everything.

In today's 5-minute devotional we look at one small line in Exodus 2:4 that's very easy to miss. We'll see why staying is a choice, why presence puts you in the right place, and how Psalm 130 turns waiting into hope with its boots on. There's a simple step you can take today for someone in the middle of something you can't mend.

There's a particular tiredness that comes from loving someone you can't protect.

If you've done everything you could and it still wasn't enough, this one is for you.

Today we sit with Jochebed, the mother of Moses. She hid her baby for three months, then wove a basket, sealed it with tar, and placed him in the river. The world would call that giving up. Scripture calls it faith. Hebrews 11:23 tells us Moses' parents acted by faith, not by defeat, and there's a real difference between surrender and abandonment.

We'll look at three small things to carry today: that faith isn't the opposite of doing your best, that letting go isn't walking away, and that Jochebed never saw the end of the story. She simply did the next right thing and left the rest with God. We also hear about Joe Ball from Devon, whose yes on the worst day of his life saved four others.

Today's one step: name the thing you cannot carry. Say it out loud if you can. Then pray, "God, I've done what I can. This part is yours."

Have you ever been in a room where something wrong was happening, and you said nothing? Most of us carry a small ache from moments like that.

We picture courage as something loud. A speech. A stand. And because we've never done anything that brave, we quietly decide we're not brave people at all. But two midwives in Exodus 1 change that story. Shiphrah and Puah never made a speech, never marched, never confronted Pharaoh in his palace. They simply refused, day after day, in ordinary rooms - and the whole rescue of Israel turns on their quiet no.

Today's devotional looks at three things their story teaches us: that courage is often a refusal rather than a performance, that fear pointed in the right direction sets us free, and that you don't need power or status to change something. God sees the real you in the ordinary room, making the small right choice.

There's a name in your phone you always scroll past.
Not angry any more. Just quiet. Just distant.

Joseph's brothers sold him for silver and sent him far from home. Years later they stood in front of him, hungry and afraid, with no idea who he was. What he said next is one of the bravest sentences in the Bible, and it isn't "let's forget it ever happened."

Today we sit with Genesis 45 and find that real reconciliation never asks us to lie about the hurt. It tells the truth gently, and then it says "please come closer." Joseph names the wound, holds out tenderness, and trusts that God has been quietly at work all along. Your step today isn't the whole mountain. It's one pebble.

Have you got a prayer you have prayed so often you feel silly saying it again?
You are not wearing God down. You are doing something braver than you know.

Today we sit with Jacob, alone in the dark, wrestling until dawn and refusing to let go. His words were simple: "I will not let you go unless you bless me" (Genesis 32:26, NLT). Holding on is not the opposite of trusting God. Very often, it is exactly what trusting God looks like. And if you walk away with a small limp, that limp is not shame. It is proof that you stayed.

Your tiny holy step today: do not pray a longer prayer. Pray the same short sentence you have prayed a hundred times, one more time. While the kettle boils. On the walk to the school gate. Let that be enough.

You can be completely forgiven and still be limping.

If something from your past is settled with God but still aches in ordinary life, this five minutes is for you.

Today we sit with King David in one of the most honest moments in the Bible. Nathan tells him plainly that the Lord has taken his sin away, done, finished, complete. But the next verse is just as honest: David still had to walk through the fallout of his choices. Grace and consequence can sit side by side without cancelling each other out, and God stays right beside you while the slow mending happens.

Your one small step today: don't ask God to fix it in the next five minutes. Just say a simple thank you that he's staying close while you heal.

Most of us learned early that every good offer has a catch. Then, quietly, we start to wonder whether God's love works the same way.

In today's five-minute devotional we sit with one short line from Paul to a young pastor called Timothy: "If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is" (2 Timothy 2:13, NLT). God's faithfulness is not a reward for good behaviour. It flows from his character, not your track record. And because it is who he is, he cannot switch it off, in the same way water cannot be dry.

If you are leading at your corps or church, volunteering, or simply trying to love your family well, and you are carrying a quiet worry that you are not quite qualified anymore, this one is for you. You were never on a trial period.

Your tiny step today: when that old fear rises, say six small words quietly to yourself. He cannot deny who he is.

Some of us look at the box marked "family" and think, that was never really solid ground for me.

If that's you, today's word is for you.

In this 5-minute devotional we look at John 1:12-13, where John says something quietly explosive. Your place in God's family never came from your family tree. It doesn't come from the right corps, the right church home, or the right sort of background. It comes from God, which means nobody's history disqualifies them and nobody's history automatically qualifies them either. And if your faith didn't come from your upbringing, your upbringing can't undo it.

"But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn - not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God." John 1:12-13

Find a quiet moment. In the car, or at the sink. Say these words out loud, even quietly: "I belong to God's family, not because of where I came from, but because he chose to make me his."
