Introduction

When we read the Gospels, we encounter a Jesus who is not only powerful and wise, but also deeply compassionate. In Matthew 9:27-38, we see Jesus overwhelmed with compassionate pity for the people. He sees they are like sheep without a shepherd. This compassion echoes the deep inner mercy of God.

Like Sheep Without a Shepherd

Jesus came to be our Shepherd, the one who can show us how to avoid life's pitfalls. He saw the crowds, and his heart was moved with compassion because they were like sheep without a shepherd. He healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, and proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God.

As we reflect on this passage, we are reminded that Jesus is not distant or indifferent to our struggles. He sees that we too sometimes seem like sheep without a shepherd. He understands our pain and is ready to guide us through life's challenges. We can find comfort and hope in his compassionate heart.

Turn to the Shepherd

Today, let us turn to Jesus as our Shepherd. Let us seek his guidance and follow his example of love and compassion towards others. In doing so, we can avoid the pitfalls of life and experience the abundant life that he offers.

Introduction

Many of us, as Salvationists, believe we are justified with God through grace and faith alone, that there is nothing we can do to earn God's love and favour. But we also know that James writes that faith without deeds is dead. So, today we explore the powerful concept of real faith in action. Our inspiration comes from Matthew 9:27-38, a passage that teaches us about the unwavering belief in Jesus and the incredible things that can happen when we reach out to him.

In this passage, we encounter two blind men who desperately seek Jesus' healing touch. Despite the obstacles, they persist in their pursuit, shouting, 'Son of David, have mercy on us!' Their faith is tangible, and Jesus responds by restoring their sight.

Jesus Shows Us Faith in Action

But the story doesn't end there. Jesus continues his ministry, healing the sick, raising the dead, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom. His heart is moved with compassion as he sees the crowds, recognising their spiritual need. He urges his disciples to pray for more labourers to join in the harvest.

This passage reminds us that real faith in action believes that Jesus can meet our needs, no matter how impossible they may seem. It is a faith that perseveres through adversity, refusing to be deterred by doubt or discouragement. It is a faith that reaches out to Jesus with unwavering confidence, knowing that he is the source of all healing and restoration.

What About Our Own Faith in Action?

Today, let us reflect on our own faith in action. Are we willing to believe that Jesus can meet our needs, even when circumstances seem bleak? Are we willing to reach out to him, trusting that nothing and no-one will stop us from seeking his help?

Introduction

Have you ever felt like God is taking too long to answer your prayers? Have you ever asked yourself or someone you trust, why won't God answer my prayer? Like the blind men in Matthew 9:27-38, who desperately cried out to Jesus for healing, we can sometimes grow impatient when we don't receive an immediate response.

Why Won't God Answer My Prayer? Maybe There's a Purpose to the Delay

But what if there's a deeper purpose behind the delay? What if Jesus intentionally waits and questions us to help us understand our deepest need and to increase our faith?

In this passage, Jesus encounters two blind men who persistently follow him, pleading for mercy and healing. Instead of instantly granting their request, Jesus asks them, 'Do you believe I can make you see?' He challenges them to express their faith and trust in him.

Delays Build Our Faith

Jesus' delay in answering their pleas may seem puzzling at first, but it reveals his desire to build their faith. He wanted them to recognise that their greatest need was not physical healing but spiritual transformation. By questioning them, Jesus helped these men dig deeper and discover the true nature of their need.

Similarly, when we feel like God is too slow in answering our prayers, it's an opportunity for us to examine our hearts and align our desires with his. He may be using the waiting period to refine our faith, deepen our trust, and shape us into the people he wants us to be.

So, the next time you find yourself waiting for God's response and asking yourself why won't God answer my prayer, remember that he may be using the delay to build your faith. Embrace the questions, seek his wisdom, and trust that he knows what's best for you.

Introduction

For those who have fought in conflicts past and present on our behalf, there must have been times when they wondered whether victory would ever come. How do you retain resilience in the light of life's biggest battles?

As we reflect, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom. It is a time to honour their bravery and remember the cost of liberty. In the midst of this reflection, we turn to the Bible for guidance and encouragement.

Bible Verses About Overcoming

Revelation 21:1-7 speaks of a glorious inheritance for those who overcome. It paints a picture of a new heaven and a new earth, where there is no more pain or sorrow. It reminds us that God will dwell with his people, wiping away every tear and making all things new.

These verses remind us that as believers, we have a hope beyond this world. We have an inheritance that cannot be taken away. No matter what challenges we face, we can find strength in knowing that God is with us and that he has overcome the world.

We Are More Than Conquerors

When we encounter difficulties, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and discouraged. But these verses, along with other Bible verses about overcoming, remind us that we are more than conquerors through Christ who loves us (Romans 8:37). We have the power of the Holy Spirit within us, enabling us to overcome any obstacle that comes our way.

A Glorious Inheritance

So, let us hold on to this promise of a glorious inheritance. Let us remember that we are not alone in our struggles, and that God is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). As we face the challenges of life, let us trust in the Lord and lean on his strength.

Introduction

Water can be a powerful metaphor for the circumstances we find ourselves in, or the emotions we are feeling. If you have ever been on the coast in the middle of a storm, as you look out to sea, you may have an inkling of what living and fighting through the two world wars and other conflicts must have been like.

It is important to remember the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom. It is also a time to reflect on the spiritual thirst that exists within each of us and how we can find satisfaction in the gift of living water.

What Does Water Represent in the Bible?

In the Bible, water is often used as a symbol of cleansing, renewal, and life. It represents the Holy Spirit and the transformative power of God. In Revelation 21:1-7, we read about the new heaven and new earth, where God will dwell with his people. Verse 6 says, "'To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life'".

The Gift of Living Water

This living water is a gift freely given by God to quench our spiritual thirst. It is not something we can earn or buy. It is a grace that flows from the throne of God, bringing healing, restoration, and eternal life.

Just as physical water is essential for our physical survival, spiritual water is essential for our spiritual well-being. We are invited to come and drink from the well of living water, to find true satisfaction and fulfillment in our relationship with God.

Quenching Our Spiritual Thirst

So how do we quench our spiritual thirst? It begins with acknowledging our need for God and surrendering our lives to him. It involves daily seeking his presence through prayer, reading his Word, and participating in worship and fellowship with other believers.

When we drink from the well of living water, our souls are refreshed and our spiritual thirst is satisfied. We are filled with the love, joy, peace, and hope that only God can provide. We are transformed from the inside out, becoming more like Christ and reflecting his glory to the world.

Summary

Introduction

Many of those who serve their country in conflict and who fight to preserve our security and happiness will have seen sights that made them weep for humanity. They endured great suffering and grief on our behalf.

The comforting words of Revelation 21:1-7, remind us - as perhaps they did some of them - of the promise of eternal joy and an end to suffering and grief.

He Will Wipe Away Every Tear

In this passage, John shares a vision of a new heaven and a new earth, where God dwells with his people. He assures us that God will wipe away every tear from our eyes, and there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain. All the former things will pass away, and everything will be made new.

It is a beautiful promise of hope and restoration, assuring us that our present sufferings are temporary and that a day is coming when all pain will cease. In the midst of our trials and tribulations, we can find comfort in knowing that God sees our tears and will wipe them away.

Ours is Not a Distant God, Remote, Unfeeling

As we reflect on this promise, we are reminded that God is not distant or indifferent to our pain. He is intimately acquainted with our grief and sorrows. He is a God who empathises with us and offers us his comfort and peace.

So, let us hold on to this promise of eternal joy, knowing that one day, all suffering and grief will be replaced with everlasting joy and peace in the presence of our loving Creator.

Introduction

For those who were Christians fighting on our behalf, particularly during the two world wars of the twentieth century, there must have been times when they were comforted by the sense of God's presence with them - in the trenches, in the aircraft and boats, at the lookout points, around the decision-making tables.

As we dive back into Revelation 21:1-7, focusing on the theme of God dwelling among his people, we see that in this passage, we are reminded of the ultimate hope we have as believers - the promise of God's presence.

"God Dwells Among His People" - A Powerful Declaration

Revelation 21:3 says, ' I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, "'Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.'" This is a powerful declaration that brings immense joy to our hearts. It reminds us that God desires to be in a close and intimate relationship with his people.

The Joy of God's Presence

When we think about the joy of God's presence, we can find comfort and assurance. In his presence, we experience love, peace, and a deep sense of belonging. We are reminded that we are never alone, for God is always with us. His presence brings healing to our brokenness, strength to our weakness, and hope to our despair.

As we reflect on this truth, let us consider the impact it has on our lives. How does knowing that God dwells among his people change the way we live? How does it influence our relationships, our decisions, and our priorities? Take a moment to ponder these questions and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart.

May today be filled with the joy of God's presence. Let us seek him wholeheartedly, knowing that he is near. May his presence guide us, comfort us, and transform us. And may we be a reflection of his love and grace to those around us.

Weekly Summary

This week, on the Battle Drill Daily Devotional Podcast, we look beyond Remembrance Sunday to the vision for hope for the future found in Revelation 21, reminding ourselves this is not the end - one day God will make everything new. Each weekday we share hope and encouragement as we read and study the Bible together.

Introduction

What do you think sustained the hearts and minds of those who fought on our behalf, particularly in the two world wars of the twentieth century. I suspect that for more than a few of them, it was the idea that there was something better than this, the hope of a better future.

After Remembrance Sunday, it is comforting to turn our hearts towards the promise of a new heaven and earth. In Revelation 21:1-7, we catch a glimpse of the glorious renewal that awaits us as believers. The apostle John describes a scene where the old order of things has passed away, and all things are made new.

All Things Are Made New

Imagine a world without pain, suffering, or sorrow. A place where God himself dwells among his people, wiping away every tear from their eyes. This is the future that God has promised to those who put their trust in him.

There is Hope

As we reflect on this promise, we are reminded that even in the midst of our present struggles, there is hope. We can find comfort knowing that God is working all things together for our good, and that he has a plan to bring about a new heaven and earth.

So how do we embrace this promise? First, we must fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. He is the one who makes all things new. We can trust in his power to transform our lives and bring about the renewal of all creation.

Secondly, we must live with an eternal perspective. While we may face trials and tribulations in this world, we can find strength and endurance by keeping our focus on the hope of what is to come. Our present sufferings are temporary, but the glory that awaits us is eternal.

Introduction

As we come to the end of a week when we've considered the importance of a childlike faith, today we turn to praying for our children. Whether they are your own children, grandchildren, children in your wider family or amongst your friends, or the children in your church or corps, each one of us can be praying for them. In this week's passage, people brought their children to Jesus for his blessing. It's a reminder that prayer for our little ones is a beautiful and powerful act of love.

What to Pray for Children

But sometimes, we can be at a loss to know what to pray. So here are five suggestions:

1. Pray for Their Faith: Begin by praying for your children's faith to grow, to be deeply rooted in Christ. Ask God to nurture their belief, just as Jesus welcomed the children in Mark 10.
2. Pray for Protection: In a world filled with challenges, pray for the protection of your children. Ask God to watch over them, guard them from harm, and guide them towards safe and loving relationships.
3. Pray for Wisdom: Pray for wisdom for your children. Just as Jesus embraced these little ones, pray for their ability to make wise decisions and discern right from wrong.
4. Pray for Love: Like Jesus, pray for your children to experience and show love. Ask God to fill their hearts with love, compassion, and kindness, so they can be a shining light in the world.
5. Pray for Their Purpose: Finally, pray for your children to find their unique purpose in God's plan. Just as Jesus valued the children's presence, pray for your children to discover their calling and contribute positively to society.

Your Prayers Impact Your Children's Lives

Remember, your prayers have a profound impact on your children's lives. As you seek God's guidance and protection, and as you pray for their faith, wisdom, love, and purpose, you are actively investing in their spiritual growth and well-being. It's a beautiful way to show your love and commitment to their journey through life.

How can you incorporate these prayers into your daily life and make them a regular part of your routine in nurturing your children's faith and well-being?

In this beautiful passage, parents brought their children to Jesus, hoping for His blessings. The disciples, however, viewed these young ones as an interruption. Yet, Jesus saw a valuable lesson in their presence. He said, "Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children."

Receive the Kingdom of God Like a Child

This statement offers a glimpse into how we can receive the Kingdom of God like a child. But what does that mean? Children often approach life with simplicity, humility, and unwavering trust. They have a genuine and unpretentious faith. In the same way, we are encouraged to approach our relationship with God with childlike qualities, including humility and trust.

Surrending Our Pride and Self-Sufficiency

Receiving the Kingdom of God like a child means surrendering our pride and self-sufficiency and embracing the humility to recognise our need for God. It involves trusting in God's wisdom and guidance without doubt or cynicism. It's about approaching the mysteries of the divine with wonder and awe.

As you go about your day, consider how you can cultivate these childlike qualities in your relationship with God. Approach Him with the innocence and trust of a child, and you'll find a deeper connection to the Kingdom of God.

Learning from the Hearts of Children

Remember, you can learn a great deal from the hearts of children. By opening your heart to God with childlike faith, you can experience the peace, joy, and wonder of the Kingdom of God in a profound and transformative way.
