✅Berlin was a city on the verge of collapse in the latter days of April 1945. The Third Reich was collapsing under the unrelenting advance of Allied armies as the Second World War came to a terrible end. Of all the crucial conflicts of this time, none had a more profound symbolic meaning than the Battle for the Reichstag, the seat of German power and a powerful emblem of Nazi control.
✅The goal of the Soviet Red Army as it drew near Berlin was to seize the Reichstag and destroy the Nazi government. 1945 saw the start of the last assault on April 29. Hardened by years of savage fighting on the Eastern Front, Soviet forces marched into the centre of the city, pushing through strong German opposition. Every building and street corner in Berlin turned into a lethal labyrinth of debris and ruins.
✅March 30, 1945, saw the height of the fighting. Marshal Georgy Zhukov's Soviet forces assaulted the Reichstag. Both sides lost a great deal of soldiers during the furious and chaotic battle. The Germans fiercely protected the structure because they understood its symbolic value. With same tenacity, the Soviets continued.
✅The Soviets advanced during the day. They had broken through the Reichstag's defences by evening and were battling floor by floor, room by room. The once-grand structure reverberated with gunfire, explosions, and yelled orders. Hours of nonstop fighting later, Soviet soldiers made it to the rooftop.
✅A moment that would live on in history saw Soviet soldier Mikhail Yegorov and serjeant Meliton Kantaria raise the crimson flag of the Soviet Union atop the Reichstag. One of the most famous pictures of World War II would be taken of this incident by war correspondent Yevgeny Khaldei. Amidst a devastated city, the flag, which was flapping in the wind, represented the defeat of Nazi Germany and the victory of the Allied forces.
Function and Consequences
✅Reminding people of the costs of war and the persistent desire for peace are the tales of the soldiers who fought in the conflict, their bravery, and their sacrifices. Now housing the German Bundestag, a representation of democracy and unity in a nation previously split by oppression and war, the Reichstag was rebuilt and repaired.
