Publisher's Summary:
The Things They Carried meets Jesus' Son in this profoundly insightful, painfully hilarious story about love, war, and cracked spines. For Derrick "Vez" Vezcheck, dwell time - the period at home between deployments - is a different kind of battle. Swap enemies for civilian expectations, and you get a sense of what Vez is up against: a patient and loving wife who'll stick by him no matter what, a young daughter who's a little too OK with seeing dad every six months, and a community that's quick to thank him for his service, even if he himself has long forgotten what he's fighting for. In Battle Rattle, Brandon Davis Jennings' darkly comic and all-too-real follow-up to 2015's award-winning novella Waiting for the Enemy, the war is never out of sight and definitely never out of mind. With redeployment looming and everyone around him falling apart, Vez must choose between making things right at home and utterly destroying everything in his path - before it gets decided for him.

More Than a War Story
Not to diminish the tragedy of these charactersâ war experiences, but what makes this a must-read is the compassion and empathy Jennings deploys to realistically capture not just the horror of PTSD, but the all too familiar horrors of the every day: our routine failures, inadequacies, and anger. Nothing is rendered lightly, not a trip to pick up a child from ballet class or a mission to hit a target. The novel asks through the often pained and darkly comic narration of its main character Vezcheck: âHow hard is it to just forget about what-ifs and live?â The âwhat-ifsâ function as the battle rattle these characters carry home with them, but the question pertains to anyone whoâs been betrayed by a lover, misunderstood by a child, forced to leave those weâve loved behind, and rendered incapable of expressing why we do some of the dumb s*** we do. This is as much a novella about a collective American depression as it is about our returning soldiers. When war seems ever-present yet distant, itâs all too important to be reminded of our connections to and responsibilities for all of us who are damaged.
The haunt of war
Brandon Davis Jennings' novella about war and its aftereffects hits the bull's-eye when it comes to fiction veritas. The story of battle buddies Vezcheck, Rake, Cammack and Harris is as real as anything I've ever read about our modern wars. An explosion on a dull afternoon in the desert and the resulting litter of body parts are the things they carry home...and will likely haunt the reader as well. Jennings shows us how the casual swipe of a pen across a document in the Oval Office can consign thousands of men and women to their deaths as well as tens of thousands more who'll be forever changed by war. "Battle Rattle" is full of keenly-observed characters and dialogue that rings true at every syllable. Highly recommended!
Much of his prose involving the American military experience is part of the best being written today
I met Brandon many years back at a writing Conference in Prague (we were roommates). Upon first reading some of his essays and fiction, I was greatly impressed at the craftsmanship, the humor, the wit, and the overall emotional and intellectual depth displayed in his voices and characters.
