  • Ukraine's military chief says Russian spring offensive has begun | BBC News
Ukraine's military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi has said that Russia has launched a new offensive on the northeast of the country, adding that a large increase in assaults was already being observed.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had warned earlier that Russia was preparing an offensive on the two regions of Kharkiv and Sumy.
Moscow is close to fully pushing Ukrainian forces out of their foothold in Kursk region, which they held since last August and which lies over the border from Sumy region.
Zelenskiy said on Monday that Ukrainian forces were also present in the adjacent Russian region of Belgorod.

  • EU puts counter-tariffs on hold for 90 days after US pauses its higher tariffs | BBC News
The European Union says it is putting its retaliatory tariffs against the US on hold after US President Donald Trump paused his tariff hikes for 90 days.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU wants "to give negotiations a chance" after Trump announced yesterday that there would be a 90-day pause for nations hit by higher US import tariffs.
Trump’s universal 10% levy for all countries, except China, remains in place - as does the 25% rate for all aluminium, steel, and cars entering the US.

Tate has denied the claims in a written defence submitted to the High Court, calling them a "pack of lies" and "gross fabrications".

  • Israel seizing ‘large areas’ of Gaza as thousands of people left displaced | BBC News
The Israeli military says it is creating a military corridor in Gaza by seizing territory between the city of Rafah and neighbouring Khan Younis.
During a visit to the area on Wednesday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said: "All of Rafah will be evacuated and turned into a security area.”
Up to 390,000 people have been displaced over the past three weeks, with two-thirds of Gaza's territory now designated by the Israeli military as "no-go" zones or placed under evacuation orders, according to the UN.
On Tuesday, UN Secretary General António Guterres condemned the Israeli blockade, saying it violated international law and had opened "the floodgates of horror".

  • China hits back at Trump with 84% tariffs on US as trade war intensifies | BBC News
China has slapped retaliatory tariffs of 84% on all US imports, deepening a trade war between Beijing and Washington.
It comes as President Donald Trump had earlier put a 104% tariff on Chinese goods - but later raised this to 125%, citing a "lack of respect" from China.
Trump has paused higher tariffs on other countries, though a "universal 10%" levy will be in place.
Financial markets in Asia jumped following news of the reprieve, with one expert saying the region is 'breathing a massive sigh of relief’.

  • How Trump’s tariffs on Vietnam might affect US businesses | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has placed a 46% tariff on all goods imported to the US from Vietnam, causing worries for some US businesses and consumers.
About half of Nike and 39% of Adidas trainers are made in Vietnam, and Samsung also has significant production operations in the country.
Vietnam has been hit with a 46% tariff on goods it wants to import to the US. So a pair of trainers that cost £114 before the tariffs, will now face an import cost of £146.
The exact price at a retail store will depend on how much of the cost Nike – or any firm importing to the US – decides to pass on to the customer.
