  • Trump and Iran trade new threats after strikes exchanged | BBC News
US President Donald Trump and Iran's senior officials have traded new threats of further action, after the two sides exchanged strikes.
Trump said Tehran had taken "too long to negotiate a deal" and would now "have to pay the price", without giving specific details. He said Iran had been "completely defeated" and was "all talk and no action".
It came after Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier warned his country would "leave no attack or threat unanswered", saying that the US had suffered "defeats on the battlefield".
The US said it struck Iranian sites on Tuesday in response to the downing of a US army helicopter in the Gulf. Iran then launched strikes at US bases in the region.

  • World Cup 2026: Your big questions answered | The Global Story
The Fifa 2026 World Cup kicks off this week.
Beginning Thursday, football - or soccer - matches, depending on your preference, will be played in the US, Mexico, and Canada, with a record 48 nations competing for the trophy.
However, the tournament has been beset by controversies over ticket prices, travel bans that affect fans and officials, and security concerns.
We answer questions from the audience about what to expect from this year’s World Cup, with BBC Sports football issues correspondent, Dale Johnson.
Both Sep Blatter and Michel Platini had their bans reduced - Blatter to six years and Platini to four. In terms of the Swiss court cases, they have both been acquitted - once in 2022 and then again when Swiss authorities prosecuted again and lost again in March 2025.

  • Illegal mini-marts to shut for up to a year under law change | BBC News
Illegal mini-marts, barbers and vape shops could be shut for up to a year under new powers announced by the UK government, following lengthy investigative reporting by BBC News into organised crime on British high streets.
The investigations have exposed drug gangs, child sexual exploitation, money laundering and immigration crime linked to shops selling illegal cigarettes, vapes and drugs.
As the law stands in England and Wales, authorities can only close a shop for three months, with an option to extend closure to six months using anti-social behaviour legislation. The government's planned change will double the potential closure time.
Making the announcement, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised the BBC's reporting, saying that people felt high streets were being taken over by "organised crime [and] immigration criminality". The government was "not prepared to tolerate it", she said.

  • US strikes Iran in response to downing of military helicopter | BBC News
The US says it has carried out a series of strikes on Iranian military and surveillance sites in response to the downing of an American helicopter in the Gulf.
Air defence systems, ground control stations and radar sites were targeted near the Strait of Hormuz, the US military Central Command (Centcom) said.
In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched strikes on 21 targets at US bases in the region, one in Bahrain and the other in Jordan, while Kuwait's army said it was also intercepting an attack.
The US has described its strikes as "a proportional response" for the Apache helicopter downing on Monday, while the IRGC described the attacks as "vicious".
US President Donald Trump had earlier accused Iran of shooting down the helicopter and said the US "must, of necessity" respond. The two crew members survived and were rescued by an American sea drone.

  • US President Trump says Iran shot down US helicopter and vows to respond | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a US helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz and vowed to respond to the attack out of "necessity".
Two crew members of the downed Apache helicopter were rescued by an American sea drone, US Central Command (Centcom) said.
"There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack."
It was not immediately clear what the US response would be, but any military action risks inflaming the shaky ceasefire with Iran once again. There has been no immediate response from Tehran on the US president's comments.
