  • Israel and Lebanon agree to implement ceasefire if Hezbollah stops attacks | BBC News
Israel and Lebanon have agreed to renew their fragile ceasefire and create a number of "pilot" security zones inside Lebanon in which Hezbollah operatives would be banned, the US state department has announced.
A joint statement, external said the agreement was "contingent on a complete cessation" of attacks by the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah, among other conditions.
The three countries also "rejected any attempt, by any state or non-state actor, to hold Lebanon's future hostage".
The agreement was announced in Washington on Wednesday, after Israeli strikes killed at least nine people in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel.

  • Why Henry Nowak's murder sparked a debate on race and policing in the UK | Global News Podcast
The murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, and his treatment by police in the moments before his death, have sparked a backlash in Britain.
Newly released video shows that Mr Nowak, who was white, was handcuffed and arrested as he lay dying - despite telling officers he had been stabbed and couldn't breathe. His killer, Sikh man Vickrum Digwa, had falsely accused him of a racist attack.
The BBC's political correspondent Rob Watson tells us that the case has provoked a debate about race and policing in the UK.
Nigel Farage, the leader of the right-wing populist Reform Party, has claimed Mr Nowak's death was evidence of "anti-white prejudice" and "two-tier policing", suggesting that the British public react with "pure, cold rage". Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged calm, and accused Mr Farage of exploiting the murder to create "grievance and division". He has also said the police face "serious questions".
On Tuesday, at least 11 police officers were injured in clashes with protestors near the site of the murder.
Hampshire Police Chief Constable Alexis Boon has said the force is "sorry for handcuffing and arresting Henry", and that an investigation by the police watchdog will aim to understand the officers' actions.

  • Why was Hasan Piker banned from the UK? | The Global Story
On Sunday, two prominent left-wing political commentators in the US — Hasan Piker and his uncle, Cenk Uygur – said they had been barred from visiting the UK.
Both men were due to appear at the SXSW London festival, but say the British government blocked them from entering the country because of their criticism of Israel.
The British government confirmed that it had denied them entry on the grounds that their presence in the UK “may not be conducive to the public good” but did not elaborate further.
Their cases have sparked renewed debate about the limits of free speech in the UK.
We speak to American political activist Shabbos Kestenbaum – who was due to debate Cenk Uygur in London – and to the legal academic and host of the BBC’s The Law Show, Joelle Grogan.

  • Why Exmouth residents are suing South West Water | BBC News
Lawyers say nearly 2000 people across Devon and Cornwall have signed up to demand compensation from the local water company over sewage spills.
The group legal claim wants South West Water held responsible for occasions when raw sewage discharges prevented people using the sea and deterred tourists from using local businesses.
South West Water last year spilled sewage for more hours than any other English water company – more than 400,000 in total. It is also due to be sentenced after pleading guilty to repeated illegal sewage spills.
South West Water said it is aware of the legal claim and is currently investing £760m to reduce the amount of sewage it discharges.

  • US and Iran launch new strikes, as Kuwait says airport hit by Iranian drones | BBC News
The US military said it launched "self-defence" strikes on Iran overnight, and shot down ballistic missiles and drones fired at ships and Gulf countries.
The strikes on Qeshm Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, were "in response to attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East", US Central Command (Centcom) said.
Iran said it had attacked US bases and helicopters in a "regional country" using missiles and drones in retaliation. Centcom said Tehran fired two missiles at Kuwait and three at Bahrain, all of which broke apart or were intercepted.
Kuwait's army later said Iranian drones had hit its international airport, causing "significant" building damage and injuries to a number of people.
The latest attacks come amid stalled ceasefire negotiations between the US and Iran, after talks on a deal to end the months-long war failed to advance over the weekend.

  • Ukrainian drones hit Russia’s St Petersburg area | BBC News
Russia said its air defences have been responding to a Ukrainian drone attack on the area around St Petersburg.
At least 50 of the drones were downed over the Leningrad region northwest of Moscow, according to the regional governor Alexander Drozdenko.
Black smoke could also be seen rising over St Petersburg on Wednesday, with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky confirming the city's oil terminal had been hit.
In a separate incident, Russian authorities in the occupied Donetsk region said a Ukrainian drone hit a bus on the way to Russian-occupied Crimea, killing seven people and inujuring 11 others.
The attack comes as St Petersburg hosts the annual International Economic Forum - an event designed to showcase Russia to the world - and a day after a massive Russian assault on cities across Ukraine killed at least 22 people, including several women and children.

  • Israel strikes southern Lebanon amid partial ceasefire with Hezbollah | BBC News
Israel continued its attacks in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, but did not strike Beirut following a partial ceasefire agreement with the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.
Lebanon said that, under an agreement announced by US President Donald Trump late on Monday, Israeli forces would not bomb the capital in exchange for Hezbollah not attacking Israel.
It came after Iran said Israeli action in Lebanon jeopardised talks on a deal to end its war with the US.
Following the ceasefire announcement, the Israeli military said it had intercepted two projectiles fired into northern Israel. Hezbollah said it had attacked Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, where officials reported deadly Israeli strikes.
